CBN Highlights

Carter Burden Luncheon Club Re-opening

We are excited to announce that after a two year renovation, the Carter Burden Luncheon Club and Older Adult Center on East 74th Street has officially reopened!

We celebrated this soft reopening with an event in January, complete with a special dessert and fun "Bingo with Bill" game (hosted by our Executive Director, Bill Dionne). Since this initial reopening, our Luncheon Club members have enjoyed daily socializing, congregate meals, and activities at the center.

We look forward to hosting a Grand Re-opening celebration soon - stay tuned for updates!

Alexa, Take Me To The Moon!

Amazon gave one of CBN's members an unforgettable experience a la “Alexa, take me to the moon!” Seen here is CBN member Mary Coleman with Amazon’s Kelly Wenzel.

From NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Mary recently interacted remotely with Alexa on-board the un-crewed Orion spacecraft during Artemis I. Artemis I tested how well commercial technology like Alexa could perform in tough environments like space. Remote interactions such as Mary's helps engineers understand how voice technology and AI can assist astronauts on subsequent missions for information gathering and day-to-day tasks.

Due to its ease of communication, Alexa is accessible for a variety of ages, whether used in space or here on Earth! With grant support for a pilot study, CBN had previously provided Alexa-enabled devices to homebound members to help improve their quality of life. The success of that study led CBN to provide feedback to Amazon’s accessibility division opening the door for collaborations such as inclusion in the Artemis I virtual crew experience.

Celebrating the Holidays with CBN

Carter Burden members celebrated the holidays in style this year at our Older Adult Centers! Participants at our festive events enjoyed themed music, performances, dancing, snacks, and more to celebrate important dates such as Christmas, Chinese New Years, Black History Month, Valentine's Day, and more.

Big thanks to everyone who continues to celebrate with CBN!

103rd Birthday Celebration

You may recall all the press and celebrations for Covello Older Adult Center member Esther's 100th Birthday celebration in 2020. Well, she is continuing the party and just celebrated her 103rd birthday at Covello - and her dancing has not stopped!

Esther has lived in East Harlem since she moved here from Puerto Rico in the 1930s, and continues to be an amazing part of our community at Covello. All of us at CBN wish Esther a Happy 103rd Birthday!

Volunteering at CBN

New York Mets Senior Smiles Painting Class

Volunteers from the Mets Front Office recently visited our Covello Older Adult Center in East Harlem to host an exciting New York Mets Senior Smiles Painting Class! Participants of all skill levels created beautiful artwork with the help of the Mets volunteers, complete with snacks, drinks, and a visit from Mrs. Met herself.

Our members had a great time creating fun pieces of art and appreciated the Mets-themed giveaways! We thank the Amazin Mets Foundation for their support of CBN, not only at this fun event which was a home run but also through a generous grant to fund basic programming.

Colgate-Palmolive's Card Making Project

This Valentine's Day, volunteers from Colgate shared some love and holiday spirit by making special cards for our older adults! These festive Valentine's cards were distributed at our Older Adult Centers and brightened up our members' days. We thank Colgate's amazing team of volunteers for their thoughtfulness and continued support of CBN!

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is in full swing at our Older Adult Centers! Plenty of opportunities are available for individual, group and corporate volunteers to get involved at any of our 4 centers, including meal service, custom events, garden beautification, and more - and now that the Carter Burden Luncheon Club has reopened, we will soon be resuming volunteering at our Upper East Side location, including meal delivery to homebound elders.

For information on how to get involved, click here to visit our website, or contact Jenny Moreno, Director of Volunteer Services, at morenoj@carterburdennetwork.org.
