FR DAT to debut stand-alone Law Enforcement Disability Awareness Trainings in Virginia
Virginia's Department of Criminal Justice Services, with support from the Virginia Board of People with Disabilities and the Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, will be debuting NU FR DAT's recently completed specific training on Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities, Dementia/Alzheimer's Disease, Mental Health and Acquired/Traumatic Brain Injury (half day). This initiative will begin January 28th-31st and will be delivered in a Train the Trainer format . Virginia has also renewed their agreement to provide the comprehensive Law Enforcement Disability Awareness Train the Trainer. In 2018, 68 officers received the program, representing 38 Police Departments such as Newport News Police Department, Chesapeake Sheriff's Office, and Roanoke County Police Department.
Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response System receives funding to provide 9-1-1 Telecommunicator and Firefighter/EMS train the trainer Disability Awareness Programs from NU FR DAT

Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response System received funding to provide one 9-1-1 telecommunicator and one firefighter/ems disability awareness train the trainer program at the Public Safety Operations Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. Recognizing the importance of this program, personnel from the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response System applied for and were granted funding from the Hampton Roads Planning Commission to hold the trainings. The 9-1-1 telecommunicator training will be held on February 26th & 27th, 2019 with FR-DAT Master trainer Michelle Kerr and the FF/EMS being held on March 14th & 15th, 2019 with FR DAT Master Trainer Deputy Chief Maria Walker.

FR DAT contracted to train NYC Department of Corrections
  

    The New York City Department of Corrections has contracted with NU FR DAT to provide training specific to heath and emergency services. NU assisted in identifying the University of Buffalo School of Architecture Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA) Center. Over three days in February the DOC will be provided information to address the specific needs of inmates as well as the processes and procedures to carry out these initiatives for people with disabilities incarcerated.

NU FR DAT Welcomes new Office Assistants
FR DAT would like to welcome David J. Whalen and Sean Nisbet to our team.
David graduated from Williamsville South School in June 2018 and also works part time at Duff's Famous Wings. He is responsible for outreach mail, product completion, and presenting to first responders .
Sean interned with FR DAT through the New York State Office of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Employment Training Program April to August 2018. Our office hired him in September. Sean's role is database input and retrieval and identification of contacts, to include first/emergency responders.
FR DAT Director and Marcie Roth to present at the NYSEMA 2019 Winter Conference in Syracuse, NY



On February 12, 2019 FR DAT Director and Marcie Roth (CEO of Inclusive Emergency Management Strategies) will be presenting at the NYSEMA Annual Conference. They have collaborated to provide a presentation for Emergency Managers to better understand the The conference sessions encourage stakeholders at all levels of government, the private sector, and related professions to exchange ideas and collaborate to protect lives and property from disaster.

EMS online 6 hour Training Available:
The EMS online training adapted the national Train the Trainer program into a compatible, easy to use 6-hour program. Customized exclusively for EMS in front of a live studio audience of EMTs, the training addresses the basics of all areas EMS need to know to ensure proper, appropriate, proactive response when interacting and addressing the need of individuals with disabilities.

Mental Health and De-escalation Training for Law Enforcement Professionals
This training program stems from a program that was originally developed at the University of Alberta, Department of Psychiatry, to advance the mental health training of police officers.
It proved overwhelmingly successful, showing increases in police mental health awareness, communication, de-escalation and empathy skills as well as an increase in police efficiency and a decrease in number of use-of-force occurrences.
