Wildlife Sanctuary Spotlight

Dotty, the turtle has a new home!

She is a Diamondback Terrapin an endangered native species that is extremely unique. Terrapins thrive in saltmarshes and have a preference for brackish water(where salt and fresh water meet). Dotty's new home has a real beach with reed grasses lining the back offering her shelter and cover. The water has aquatic sand with real sea shells which she will receive natural forms of calcium.

The museum has a new Tegu Lizard, species that are native to South America. He is black and grey with speckled bands across the back and tail. These reptiles can grow to 4 feet, weigh 10 pounds and live for 20 years.

Roaring Brook Nature Center

You may think the winter season is quiet at Roaring Brook Nature Center, however, it can be busy and beautiful. Our educators are actively providing outreach programs in many area classrooms. The Wildlife Clinic is extremely busy accepting injured wildlife. It is difficult for raptors (hawks and owls) to find food in winter, often resulting in injuries. A new Raptor Shed is now open to quarantine newly arriving birds for treatment. There are a number of exciting programs for families on the horizon including full moon hikes, The Frogs of Spring, and more. The trails through Werner's Woods are open from dawn to dusk.

Our curriculum is based off the Connecticut Early Learning Development Standards (CT.ELDS) which includes fun activities which to aid in learning. In the spring, the preschoolers will help create an outdoor garden choosing what they want to plant, maintain the garden and enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables.
