We are providing culturally responsive, safe spaces for elementary and middle school students to normalize their emotions in small groups. By reflecting on their experience in this supportive environment, they are able to recognize, label and share their feelings during these challenging times.
At Thorndyke Elementary, Sebastian works with students on negative self-talk. She uses a “negative self-talk monster” (the bully in our brain that says mean things like “I can’t do this”, or “This is too hard”, or “Nobody likes me”) so students can practice naming their feelings. Working on these skills is more important than ever during these challenging times as it gives students a space to talk through their feelings.
