Winter 2022 Programming Schedule
Shape Up
Who: Members aged 14+
Where: Athletic Lounge, SOMI Center / Online via Zoom
When: Mondays weekly beginning January 10 from 6:30-8pm (no class April 4)

Shape Up is a health & fitness program for teens and adults aged 14+ with Down syndrome. Learn to take control of your health through wise food choices and fun physical activity. 45 minutes of health & nutrition education is followed by 45 minutes of fun exercise. Coach Tabitha will be leading our sessions at the Special Olympics Michigan Center. Sessions will be held in the athletic lounge in the northwest corner of the building, so please park in the West parking lot and enter from the main doors there (see map). With COVID still prevalent, we ask that all participants wear a mask for the duration of the class. The exercise portion of class will be livestreamed on Zoom beginning at 7:15pm for those unable to attend in-person.
Book Club
Who: Members aged 16+
When: 2nd & 4th Tuesdays monthly beginning January 11 from 5:30-6:30pm

Teens and adults with Down syndrome are invited to join Bobbi for Book Club at Schuler Books on 28th Street. All reading levels are welcome.
Virtual Music Jamboree
Who: Members of all ages
Where: Online via Zoom
When: Wednesdays & Thursdays weekly beginning January 12 from 8-8:30pm*
*Days and time may change as Leah's availability allows.

Members of all ages are invited to join our Music Therapist Leah for a virtual sing-along session featuring your favorite songs. Sessions will be offered online via Zoom every Wednesday and Thursday evening at 8pm. Please note that this is not a therapy program, but rather focused on fun and socialization.
GR Cooking Capers
Who: Members aged 16+
When: Thursdays weekly beginning January 20 from 6-8pm

Cooking Capers introduces teens and adults to culinary terminology, cooking methods, measurements, and kitchen safety while crafting a delicious, healthy recipe. Two Grand Rapids groups will alternate weeks in the kitchen in the Life Skills Room at SOMI. We ask that everyone be masked as we cook and hang out. We will still eat together at the end of the night, but will make sure we are socially distanced while enjoy our meal.
Buddy Up Tennis
Who: Members aged 5+
When: Saturdays weekly beginning January 22 from 10:15-11:45am

Buddy Up Tennis is back! Professional coaches and Buddies teach children, teens, and adults with Down syndrome the game of tennis while supporting healthy physical and social development. No prior tennis experience is required and tennis racquets and equipment are provided.
Virtual Aging with Down Syndrome
Who: Parents/caregivers of adults with Down syndrome aged 30+
Where: Online via Zoom
When: 4th Mondays monthly beginning January 24 from 6:30-7:30pm (will meet May 23 instead of May 30)

Caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome over the age of 30 are invited to this support group sponsored by DSAWM and Alzheimer’s Association. Participants share experiences and discuss the process of caring for loved ones growing older with Down syndrome.
Other Opportunities
ACT Lunch & Learn with Nate & Eric
Tuesday, January 18 from 12:30-1:30pm
Artists Creating Together is launching a new Lunch & Learn Series focused on exploring important disability-related topics with informed guest speakers. DSAWM is excited to be the first guest speaker on January 18! Pack a lunch and join Program Director Nate Clark and Self-Advocate Intern Eric Willinger as they discuss the topic of Down Syndrome Awareness. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Free parking is available onsite. Registration is required.
Knights of Columbus Valentine's Fundraiser
Saturday, February 12 from 4-11pm
Our friends at the Knights of Columbus are hosting a special Valentine's Dinner, Dance, and Raffle to support DSAWM! Join us on Saturday, February 12 at West Leonard Banquet Hall for dinner, dancing, games for kids, and a raffle! The price for dinner is $30 for adult plates and $15 for child plates.
