December 6, 2023

Dear Providence,

I would like to invite you to the Inauguration Ceremony on Wednesday, December 13th for Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Constitutional Officers, and Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District Directors. This is a good opportunity to meet your representatives and I hope to see you there. If you are unable to attend, the ceremony will be streamed on Channel 16.

As it gets colder, many of our most vulnerable residents and neighbors need our support. In this newsletter, you will find several opportunities where you can help including our Winter Gear Drive and Tampon Tree.

In addition, the County's Hypothermia Prevention Program is open to adults in need of immediate shelter every day through March 2024. The program provides warm shelter, food, and other services. If you see someone at risk for hypothermia, call 703-691-2131.

Health and Human Services Updates

Hypothermia Prevention Program

Since 2005, the Hypothermia Prevention Program has prevented death and serious injuries among Fairfax County's most vulnerable residents by ensuring that no one should sleep outside during the winter months. The program is available to any adult in need of immediate shelter. The 2023-24 program will run through March 31st, 2024. Hours of operation may vary per location.

If you see someone who is unsheltered and you think they are at risk of hypothermia, call the County's non-emergency police number at 703-691-2131. A police officer will conduct a wellness check.

Two-Degree Challenge

Heating your home can take a lot of energy, which often means higher electricity or natural gas bills over the fall and winter months. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has estimated that over 40% of annual energy consumption in American homes is for heating.

Why you should take the "Two-Degree Challenge."

Tips for a Greener Holiday Season

Did you know that the average American household creates 25% more waste during the holiday season? This is the perfect time of year to add a couple of easy, green traditions to your festivities!

  1. Choose reusable or recyclable wrapping for your gifts. Reusable wrapping could be a basket, a decorative fabric wrap, or a previously used gift bag.
  2. If you find broken holiday lights, take them to your nearest MOM’s Organic Market for recycling instead of throwing them away! They are accepting all holiday lights - working or non-working - until January 31st.
  3. Heading to a holiday party? Remember to bring your food storage containers to take home leftovers. You can also use your extra food storage containers that have been clogging up your cabinets to give away homemade treats.
  4. Are you trying to decide whether to put up a real or fake Christmas tree? This is a tough environmental question, but ultimately, real trees are the better choice. Check out Clean Fairfax's blog article on the topic. Buy locally to support Virginia Christmas tree growers and to reduce transportation miles. Find a Christmas tree farm near you
  5. Looking for a zero-waste gift idea? How about a donation to a local green organization, like our friends at Fairfax ReLeaf? You can multiply your donation if your employer offers a match, or opt for regular, sustaining monthly donations through options such as the Combined Federal Campaign (Fairfax ReLeaf CFC# 27737).

If you have questions about reducing waste this holiday season, check out the Clean Fairfax website or send a note to [email protected].

Land Use and Transportation Updates

Guide to Snow

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for removing snow and ice from the thousands of miles of public roads (interstate, primary, and secondary) in Fairfax County. Clearing is done on a priority basis, with interstates and high-volume roads cleared first. Once the most heavily traveled roads and emergency routes are adequately clear, snow crews move to less-traveled roads and subdivisions.

Parking Reimagined Implementation

On September 26th, the Board repealed and replaced Article 6 of the Fairfax County Zoning Ordinance. Article 6 contains the off-street parking and loading regulations for land development in the county.

The new ordinance was adopted following a two-year study of Fairfax County's parking regulations to update and modernize these requirements to incorporating current and future parking trends.

Code Compliance Corner

The Department of Code Compliance (DCC) enforces rules in response to nearly 9000 complaints about property violations each year throughout the County.
