“I had the pleasure of coaching at team of 15 great young men this past season. From our very first game, where we won off a buzzer beater in overtime by Jacob Rabb, I knew we were in for quite a season. We would go on to play multiple close games and mount multiple second half comebacks. We took just as much from our close defeats as we did from our close victories. We would go on to finish 3rd in the tournament we hosted, with our only loss coming in a 2 point loss to St. Joseph-Notre Dame following a 14-5 4th quarter comeback. We ended the serious on a positive note, capping it off with a double digit victory over Branson. Our season was filled with many ups and downs, but we showed up ready to give it 100% every night whether it was a game or practice. I was filled with pride watching all 15 of these young men begin their high school basketball career and grow together as a team, and I for one am excited to watch this class continue to represent Novato basketball over the next three seasons.” - Coach Johnny McEvoy

"This year has been one of the most rewarding years of coaching ever for me. To give some perspective, I started out thinking I was not going to coach again after a 1-year break but decided last minute that I couldn't resist. I will 100 percent be back next year and that is 100 percent due to the group of young men I had the pleasure of coaching this year. While we did not win as many games as we hoped, I can confidently say that each individual has improved from my point of view. In fact players that were on the brink of being cut when the season started received MVP votes for our group. This is something I am extremely proud of, and what I believe the JV basketball program should be all about.

Coaching this group from the first few weeks, I knew it was going to be tough. Being a younger coach myself it is always difficult to balance discipline and friendship. I think it is the hardest part of my job, and this group of guys made it way harder. They are not only talented basketball players, they were competitive, eager to learn, and gentleman the entire season. These are not characteristics you can coach, but rather a sign of their basketball IQ's and superior of the court characteristics. They came to every single practice eager to get better and it showed from game to game. Whenever we lost a game, or won a game they maintained a next game mentality which will surely add to their success at the varsity level.

I will not be announcing awards due to the fact that we have not had our end of the year banquet. But a few shout outs/accolades I would like to address include:

- Brett Huser - Varsity level basketball IQ
- Will Carlson - Unshakable positive attitude
- Shaw Moreno - Unstoppable force/Practice Warrior
- Antonio Valentine - First to practice almost every time, no glory needed does the little things!
- Matt Decker & Mike Gates - Most Versatile and Most Improved

Thanks and Go Hornets!" -Coach Roger Baker

"First off, I want to congratulate this year's team on making NCS playoffs for the first time since 2014! That has been a program goal of ours, and we were finally able to accomplish that this year as a result of a great start to the season and a .500 record against D3 opponents. This year's team was a pleasure to coach for a number of reasons. First, they loved each other and had some of the best off court chemistry I have seen from a team. One of my proudest moments as a coach is seeing a team truly love each other, play for each other, and care about each other, and these guys loved being around each other and being teammates and I will miss this group a lot for that reason. Second, this year's Seniors came into the program the same year I was hired, so we had the whole four years together, and I'd like to think we had a pretty good bond. It was a special group of seniors who were a pleasure to be around and the first group to really embody what I had hoped for in terms of culture and leadership. They showed up, they worked hard, they were great people including providing great mentorship and friendship to the younger guys, and they lead by example. My hope is that they rubbed off on the younger guys enough to pass down those traits and have a lasting impact on our program going forward. Third, we had a tough and competitive group of younger guys who I believe did learn a lot from the Seniors and will be able to carry on the culture. I think with our Varsity returners for next year, we have a an athletic group, with a winning mindset, great people, and the program is in good hands going forward as well. Finally, I was proud of how hard this team worked and how much resilience they showed in the face of adversity. They were coachable and respectful to all coaches in the program. We started off hot, and had high hopes for this season, and then we hit a stretch where we lost a lot of really close games. It was tough, and it would have been tough on any team, but they continued to show up, stay positive, work hard, and stick together, which is not always easy in the face of adversity and disappointment. Some highlights of the season included:

- Started the season 5-0, made it to the championship game of our preseason tournament.
- Beat San Marin for the first time since 2013 at home in the first MCAL game of the season.
- Beat Pinole Valley on a Jason Carpenter game winner
- Beat Maria Carillo on a Neil Knight game winning shot plus game winning defensive stop.
- Despite losing, took a 15-1 Marin Catholic team to overtime on their home court.
- Beat Redwood on a Jason Carpenter buzzer beater from near half-court with 1.8 seconds left.

I am going to refrain from announcing any awards since we haven't been able to have our team banquet yet, but I do want to recognize just a few people. Jason Carpenter had a fantastic career as a four year Varsity player who made MCAL All-League 3 of those years, was Captain for 3 of those years, and finished 4th all-time on the MCAL career scoring list. Neil Knight, a 3 year Varsity player and one of our Captains this season, was a leader all 3 years he played on Varsity, and I thought he deserved MCAL All-League honors this year but was snubbed. Miles Elkins, a two year Varsity player, was our emotional and philosophical leader and a Captain this season. Albert Supradit was also a 3 year Varsity player and provided a big boost inside many times throughout his 3 years. I also want to thank my coaching staff for being such a fantastic group of friends and coaches who help me tremendously. Lots of credit to those guys. I feel bad not mentioning everyone else, but I want everyone to know we were absolutely 15 strong this year, and everyone played a role, accepted their role to the best of their abilities, and contributed in many ways on and off the court. It was a special group that I will miss, but I have faith the future of the program is in great hands and I can't wait to get back on the court with our returners and new guys coming up whenever we get that chance!" - Coach Rob Barde

JV Girls Basketball
"The JV Girls Basketball team has demonstrated an impressionable amount of growth individually and as a team this past season. It is easy to measure success of the season by looking at the numbers of wins and losses. But I believe that pure joy, day in and day out, is a more accurate assessment. These girls came together and truly enjoyed the season. They developed respectable appreciation to promoting confidence, accountability, camaraderie, perseverance, and commitment. The character shown with these girls through their zealous work ethic and perseverance to fight through hard times is one that simply exemplifies their love for the game; that showing up was a highlight of their day rather than a chore, which a coach cannot teach." - Coach Jojo Zeidan

"I would like to congratulate and thank all of our girls Varsity and Junior Varsity players for a competitive season! We started the year with new coaches, new plays and an overall new program. We asked the players to commit, provide a 100% effort all the time and be competitive in every game. Even though our team record didn’t show many wins, we were competitive and grew together as a team throughout the season – we successfully established a strong foundation that we will build on in seasons to come.

I want to personally thank JoJo Zeidan for volunteering to coach the JV this year, and to Stephanie Skophammer for her help as the assistant coach. The JV already celebrated their season and handed out personal awards, but I want to thank them for their efforts and commitment. I look forward to seeing everyone back next year as we continue to build on our successes this year! Stay focused, practice and see you this summer as well!" - Coach Mike Woolard

Personally I want to thank Coach Michele Smith and Coach Dave Blair for all of their help, support and experience this past season in creating the design and starting to build our team foundation – I could not have made it through the year without your help and support. I also want to thank each and every one of our players – our senior team captains Alyssa Woolard, Haylee Woolard and Charlotte Jio; our other seniors Maddie Mock, Thea Boers, Morgan Myszka, Emma Schiano and Savannah Smith; and our non-seniors Julie Martinez, Naomi Baraban, Mia Gillis and Cierra Mayer. We had a challenging season with injuries, players leaving the team for personal reasons, and trying to learn a whole new system. However, we are very proud of this team for their perseverance and drive to be competitive.

I want to personally recognize one player who gave us an all-out effort every practice and every game, she always tried, never gave up, and always wanted to improve. Congratulations to our most improved player – Morgan Myszka!

Thanks again to the seniors, who set the foundation for us to build on for next season – best of luck in college next year! To the returning players – thanks for your efforts and commitment…we look forward to working with you again next year as we build on what we started this year. Stay focused, practice and we’ll see you over the summer!" - Coach Mike Woolard

With a lot of hard work, these fourteen amazing athletes were able to go out on the floor at the JAMZ State Competition in February, and they did a beautiful job. They had no deductions and were able to bring their best to the floor. It has been quite an incredible season, as this team has put in so much effort and has bonded and grown so much. As their coach, I just want to say congratulations on a great season, and I am so proud of each one of you!" - Coach Jamie Planka

2020 CIF Jamz National Champions
"Novato varsity competition cheer team hit the ground running. Coming off their first regional competition with many injuries we decided to regroup. Regroup we did changing the routine to accommodate our athletes, to heal and move forward to State championships. This team had an amazing performance and we never looked back. We continued to up our routine headed for Jamz CIF Nationals . This team, the youngest I have ever coached at varsity level we’re all in bringing 100% to the mat. We arrived at Nationals with a very focused team and on day one, of a two day competition we were in first place. We decided to up our routine to be more competitive. The team rose to the occasion.Their hard work, dedication, and heart earned Novato 1st place in our division and level champions over 62 other teams. We are so proud of these amazing athletes. It was a challenging year which made our win so surreal . This is a memory of a lifetime for all. I’d like to thank our administration, office staff, custodians, our athletic director, our trainer and our parents . With a special thank you to Sunny, Marisol and our hard working coaching staff. Patti, Dolly, Jamie and Marcy. This is the base of our accomplishments . Knowing you are hitting the floor with so much support brings success. "First and foremost, I'd like to thank our amazing Athletic Director -Michele Sanner-, our Varsity Soccer coaches -Peter and Trish-, as well as all the team's parents for giving me the opportunity to coach the NHS JV Boys Soccer team. I also would like to thank our Athletic Director -Michele Sanner-, our Varsity Boys Soccer coach -Peter Serchia- and our team's manager -Kim Hatch- for all their support, without it I would not have being able to coach the team. I also would like give a BIG THANKS to our Athletic Trainer Steve for always working extra hard to keep our students/athletes safe and healthy! Last but not least I would like to thank each single member of our NHS JV Boys Soccer Team first for giving me the honor to be their coach, for their patience and understanding, for supporting each other and coming together as a team, for having a heart of gold and never give up no matter what, FOR GIVING ME ONE OF THE MOST EPIC COME FROM BEHIND VICTORIES I HAVE EVER SEEN and FOR MAKING THE 2019/2020 SEASON SO MUCH FUN AND UNFORGETTABLE!!!

It wasn't easy to coach and manage 37 players but in the end, it was surely very rewarding and satisfying to see the team come together the way it did! Don't forget boys that you can accomplish anything you set your minds to do in life, as long as you really want it and you work very hard for it, just as you did when you came back from being down 4-0 to defeat Tam 4-5!!!!! "2019/2020 was a great season for JV soccer, setting a couple of records. Our team bonded early, forming what I trust will be long term friendships. Then we had fun at practices and games, dodging rain, wind and a falling tree. In our games we went about 500 which is a solid performance, including beating MC twice which JV had not done in ages. On the way we had 9 different players scoring goals, and 14 different players as goal keeper - it truly was a team effort. Standout performances by key players anchored the team, and allowed less experienced players a chance to shine. Top scorers were Abby Yates, and Maggie Childers. Our key midfielders were Avery Razavi, Miranda Gibson and Kendall Barger. Defense was anchored by Julia Bleth and Tatiana Pool. Everyone played goal keeper but special mention must go to Kiana Koop, and Naomi Perez who stepped up and performed in the toughest situations. There were also critical players whose multi role capabilities helped the entire team Taylor Malone, Sofia Casano, Johana Rodas, and Layah Vigneaud. All in all an excellent season. I hope everyone stays well, and frequently washes their hands!" - Coach Robert Leyland

Varsity Girls Soccer
"The 2019 Winter season, the Varsity Soccer Girls had fun together, in spite of some of the results, we had some great match ups. It did prove to be a challenging season early on, so the focus shifted to small achievable skill goals and some all important life goals.
There was the best Goal keeper we have seen in her 4 years,  Kenna , who denied Tam to the point that they had to accuse us of deflategate and the Junior Goal keeper  Makenna  who supported the case, but also put in her very best against both Tam and SR. There was  Laura  who took the ball from the way back and through most of the other 21 players on the pitch . There was  Emma , literally laying her life on the line making sure there was a goal, while  Keegan  gave pretty much the same effort at the opposite end to make sure the goal was not. Accomplished field player,  Quintessa,  when called on in desperate times, treated us to the ultimate swatting defense; Equally accomplished  Vanessa,  once she learned what is and is not allowed in GK, put up some very impressive numbers in her own right, like less than 23% at Drake.  Meimi,  sunk the 30 yarder in over the Redwood starting keeper and all they could say was, Wow!  Maddie,  at 3 games in had a 100% scoring record. There was  Samantha , owning her wing and there was no one in the league that could match up or catch up.  Audrey,  fired off cannons from her side and also verbally from the bench.
Reina , one our best ball controllers, earned respect which also equals more defenders, and still she danced around them. With  Honeybee,  dancing right along, either right behind her   or next to her, but always right there where it mattered; the opponents could not get the ball away from either of them.  Sage,  another strong dribbler, more often chose to go straight through them rather than around them Most improved player is without a doubt  Ryann  who in the end was solid.  Faolan,  the runner- up was a close second until she started giving away handballs.  Kailey,  showed us all that calm and steady does it and she was no pushover. Then there were the brightly shining but then more meteor-like stars, that ended up playing some of best soccer of their career, only to get sidelined with injury for most of the remaining season. We counted on  Rebecca,  and that worked the first 3 games. We heard  Angela  and the huddle was never the same without her.  We saw  Sophia  who flashed her skills for the whole town to see in the hunt for the elusive Queens Cup.

The Cheerleader of the year award goes to Samantha Rapp, who despite recent knee surgery, showed up to represent.
We had to stare adversity in the face, and we mostly stared it down and won.
We laughed a lot and, fine, sometimes we also cried, but we still learned and won - at life!
I am proud over each and everyone of these student-athletes and thankful for the opportunity to coach these young ladies.
A big shout out to the parents who transported us and for your unwavering support of all the girls,

Lastly a huge thank you to Greg, for always hooking us up with wheels, to Steve for always making sure we have water and a roof over our heads, and to Michele for always making sure we have all we need." - Coach Tricia Johnson

Wrestling
"We would like to thank the Novato High School wrestling team for a great season. This year was a season of firsts: The first year MCAL had a girls MCAL Wrestling Tournament, the first time we took kids on either team to a two day tournament, the first year we had athletes make second day of the NCS wrestling tournament.

There is a misconception that wrestling is only a individual sport. Its true that we win or lose matches as individuals, but we like most teams, depend on team work and support. The team provided each other academic support, physical support in exercise, and emotional support at competitions whether we won or lost, both as individuals and as a team. This team more than other years kept each other accountable and encouraged each other not to quit.

We have had a lot of growth on the team. The seniors stepped up as leaders in ways that we haven't seen in years: Ethan Mengelberg showed leadership by preparing the underclassmen for leadership rolls-at each duel meet he would give the underclassmen the change to walk out to for the captains meetings and lead warm ups. Nahum Segura recruited from the freshman football team and developed our heavyweight squad enough for us to beat the number 1 team in the league during a duel meet.

We also want to thank Michele Sanner for her support as we hosted multiple duel meets and the MCAL tournament. Support on the schools campus was pivotal to ensuring our team was eligible cared for" - Coach Rafael Ayala

"What can be said about the young men and women of Novato High's Wrestling team that even comes close to encapsulating the dedication, perseverance, and grit that I witnessed each member of the team give throughout the year? There are just no words that suffice. Everyday in practice we had individuals pushing themselves 100% on the mats, working hard to transform themselves and their teammates as much as humanly possible into warriors. Every weekend, during what was to be their free time, they came to the tournaments, leaving the comfort of their homes at 5am for anywhere from 10 to 15 hours just to represent their school and take a stab at achieving some shred of personal glory. No matter what the circumstances at school, home, or in their personal affairs, these students came in to wrestle, more often than not leaving bruised, bloodied, and broken each time… yet everyday they would return to do it all over again. I can't thank the students enough for allowing me to help them as they achieved their dreams of victory, or at least, moved a little closer en route to them. Novato High wrestlers: champions."
