Godfrey's Feed Team Wins 7th Annual Golf Tournament
Godfrey's Feed won first place at the GDYF golf tournament.

Beautiful weather and 67 competitive golfers graced the course of Lane Creek Golf Club in Bishop, Georgia, to benefit Georgia's dairy youth on Friday, March 31.

The 7th Annual GDYF Golf Tournament was held in memory of "Bud" Wiley, Jr., who was a dairy farmer and instrumental in organizing the first GDYF golf tournaments. Thank you to all that made this event possible and to our supporters for helping us raise over $5,000 for GDYF through this event.


GDYF Annual Auction a Success at 2017 GA Dairy Conference
The annual Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation fundraising auction saw another year of success at the Georgia Dairy Conference in Savannah, 
Georgia, on Jan. 16, 2017. 
 
Bobby Smith, GDYF Board member, took the podium at the beginning of the evening banquet to recognize a long-time supporter of the youth foundation. Smith presented the 2017 Dr. Larry Guthrie award to Albert Hale in recognition of his dedication to GDYF activities.  Congratulations to Albert on this well-deserved recognition.
 
Following the award, the evening took an exciting turn as the GDYF auction began with Phil Harvey serving as auctioneer. Industry affiliates and producers alike competed in high-speed bidding to purchase items to benefit Georgia dairy youth programs. The auction raised a total of $23,500! 
Southeast Dairy Youth Retreat Registration Due May 26, Financial Assistance Form Due May 23!!

The registration deadline for the 2017 Southeast Dairy Youth Retreat is May 26! Join the Georgia GDYF delegation for a week-long retreat learning about the dairy industry and meeting students from across the southeast.

Youth ages 9-19 are invited to attend the retreat in Bradenton, Florida, on July 9-13.  During the retreat, youth participants from seven southeastern states will interact with dairy industry professionals during hands-on learning activities. This year's group will visit a wide variety of farms in Florida, ranging from a minimal input, grazing dairy milking 5,000 cows to a large agri-tourism herd that produces their own milk and cheese. The group will also make an outing to Adventure Island and get involved with interactive workshops and tours! The cost is $200 per youth participant and includes lodging (4 youth per room), events, and all meals (Sunday evening through Thursday breakfast) except lunch on Wednesday at Adventure Island. Group transport will be arranged by UGA Extension and will depart from Athens, GA on Sunday. You will be provided more information following receipt of your registration materials.

Financial Assistance is available through GDYF. Complete the Financial Assistance Form and return it to the GDYF office by May 23.
GDYF Selects 2017-18 Junior Board of Directors
Twelve individuals were selected to serve on the 2017-18 Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation Junior Board during the Georgia Junior Livestock Show in Perry, Georgia.

The members of the GDYF Junior Board will strive to connect dairy youth with the opportunities provided through GDYF. Through leadership and fundraising, the board will work to promote interest in Georgia dairy programs and help GDYF best serve young people interested in dairy activities.

2017 State Commercial Dairy Heifer Show

Held February 24th and 25th, the State Commercial Dairy Heifer Show in Perry, GA and judged by Mr. Herby Lutz was "THE" event of the year for young people in the commercial heifer project.  This year's show had 244 heifers exhibited by 209 young people.   Heifers this year ranged in weight from 257 to 810 pounds and there were ZERO heifers eliminated from the show at weigh in.  This is a huge testament to the hard work of the young people, parents, agents, advisors, and dairy producers.

GDYF Hosts First Dress-A-Cow Contest 
at State Show 
The GA Dairy Youth Foundation held their first Dress-A-Cow contest this week at the GA National Livestock Show in Perry.  Costumes ranged from firetrucks to Alice in Wonderland to football players. Spectators were blown away by the creative costumes that the kids exhibited in the first (of hopefully many) Dress-A-Cow contest. UGA Commercial Dairy Heifer Show

 The University of Georgia Dairy Science Club hosted the 20th annual Commercial Dairy Heifer Show on Saturday, February 11 th . This year's show was another tremendous success that was pulled together by show chairs James and Matt Holton. Following weigh in on Friday, the weekend's events were underway with a practice Judging Contest with five heifer classes organized by Brooke Helton. With 57 young people participating in the contest, the top youth was announced as Jessi Lynn Strickland
(231 points) of Burke County. Second place was awarded to Mary Helen Coble (226 points) also of Burke County.

Following the judging contest and new this year was an exhibitor dinner on Friday night sponsored by the Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation. This goal of this dinner was to have all exhibitors take a break to build comrodery and friendship with others that share the same interest. With the help of Dr. and Mrs. Holton, the dinner was a tremendous success.

Saturday morning got underway with an exhibitor meeting at 8:30 and
showmanship kicking off at 9:00. The 2017 show boasted 217 heifers exhibited by 198 showmen and women. Showing in two rings with judges Derek and Brittany Heizer, the competition was stiff in all grades of showmanship. As the showmanship classes concluded, the Junior Showmanship Champion was Octavia Bushey (7th grade) of Gilmer County FFA and the Senior Showmanship Champion was Haley Pulsifer (12th grade) of Perry FFA. These top two individuals received bronze casted heifer trophies thanks to show sponsors.

Immediately following showmanship, weight classes started with lightweights (250 - 486 pounds) in one ring and heavy weights in the other (487 to 762 pounds). The lightweight Junior Champion was heifer 7371 exhibited by Tyler Margita of Dawson County FFA while the Reserve Junior Champion was heifer 7500 exhibited by Colton Swartz of Coweta County 4-H. In the heavyweight ring, the Senior Champion was heifer 7813 exhibited by Shadai McCaskell of Houston County FFA and the Reserve Senior Champion was heifer 6837 exhibited by Lawton Harris of Piedmont FFA.

The success of this year's show was made possible by dedicated young people, parents, agents, advisors, dairy producers, and a great group of sponsors. The 2017 Georgia 4-H State Dairy Judging Contest was held at the UGA Instructional Arena on Friday, March 24th.  34 Juniors (6 Teams) and 18 Seniors (3 Teams) participated in the contest.

The first place Junior Team, from Carroll Co. consisted of Charlee Causey, Sydney Musick, Sara Kate McDermitt and Joseph McDermitt.  Gordon Co., who placed second are:  Joshua Carr, Gabrielle Ralston, Jazmine Ralston and Bryson Smith.  Burke Co. placed third and their members are:  Holt Sapp, Abby Joyner, Samuel Eckerman and Ivan Burgess.

The first place Senior Team from Gordon County has the opportunity to represent Georgia at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held in Madison, WI this fall.  Gordon County Team members are:  Brooklyn Carr, Caleb Carr, Luke Ryan and Gracy Sexton.  Coweta Co., Team A placed second and their team members are:  Audri Crews, Hunter Swartz, Cody Whitlock and Mady Hillebrand.  Coweta Co., Team B. placed third and their team members are:  Nicole Hillebrand, Alexa Hillebrand and Elizabeth Mansour. 
 
Thank you to Dr. Jillian Bohlen, staff, faculty, students and volunteers from the UGA Animal and Dairy Science Department for all of their coordination with the State contest.  Much appreciation to Michael Rabalais- 4-H Program Specialists, Claire Woodard-UGA Student Support and Steve Walker-Georgia 4-H IT Coordinator for their dedication to the program. 
  2017 Commercial Dairy Recordbook Winners
 
Ten students were recognized for their record-keeping excellence in the Commercial Dairy Heifer program at the Georgia Junior Livestock Award Banquet held Feb. 25, 2017, in Perry, Georgia.
 
These ten individuals meticulously recorded   details ranging from heifer nutrition and care to money earned from showing. Students were also required to answer a worksheet of questions pertaining to the dairy industry and write a story about their 2016-2017 Commercial Dairy Heifer Project experience.

Twenty students competed in the Junior Division competition, while thirteen submitted recordbooks in the Senior Division.  Congratulations to all of the participants on completing their projects and the hard work they put in throughout the 2015-2016 show season.
