Who: DSAWM members aged 16+
Where: Chapbook Cafe
When: 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month, January 7 - December 15 from 5:30-6:30pm

Teens and adults with Down syndrome are invited to join Bobbie for Book Club. Meetings will be held at Chapbook Cafe, inside Schuler Books. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase. After finishing each book, the club will attend a screening of the film adaptation!

Shape Up

Who: DSAWM members aged 14+
When: Mondays, January 13 - May 18* from 6:30-8pm
*no class on March 30 or April 6

Shape Up is a health & fitness program for teens and adults with Down syndrome. Learn to take control of your health through wise food choices and fun physical activity. 45 minutes of health & nutrition education is followed by 45 minutes of fun exercise.

Buddy Up Tennis

Who: DSAWM members aged 5+
When: January 18 - April 25* from 4-5:30pm
* no class on March 7 & 14 or April 4 & 11

Buddy Up Tennis teaches children and teens with Down syndrome the game of tennis while supporting healthy physical and social development. Athletes work with professional coaches and one-on-one Buddies. Tennis racquets are provided.

GR Cooking Capers

Who: DSAWM members aged 16+
When: every other Thursday, January 23 - April 23 (group A) / January 30 - April 30 (group B) from 6-8pm
*2 sessions offered, each group meets biweekly

GR Cooking Capers is taught by experienced GVSU Master's level dietetic students, so parents and caregivers do not need to stay. Participants learn culinary terminology, cooking methods, measurements, and kitchen safety while crafting a delicious, healthy recipe. Students enjoy the fruits of their labor at the end of each class. Our menu is always gluten-free. Parents are welcome to stay and socialize together in the dining area or drop off students and return at the end of class.

Kalamazoo Cooking Capers

Kalamazoo Cooking Capers is taught by students from WMU's Student Dietetic Association. Participants learn culinary terminology, cooking methods, measurements, and kitchen safety while crafting a delicious, healthy recipe. Parents are welcome to stay and socialize together in the dining area or drop off students and return at the end of class.

Aging with Down Syndrome
Who: Parents & caregivers of members aged 30+
Where: DSAWM office
When: Mondays once monthly, January 27, February 24, March 23, April 27, and May 18 from 6:45-8pm

Caregivers of individuals with Down syndrome over the age of 30 are invited to this support group sponsored by DSAWM and the Alzheimer’s Association. Share experiences and discuss the process of caring for loved ones growing older with Down syndrome. Aging with Down syndrome runs concurrent with Shape Up, providing an opportunity for teens and adults with Down syndrome to take control of their personal health while their parents attend the group.

MNO & DNO

When: Dates vary, once monthly on Tuesday (Lakeshore MNO) and Thursday (GR & Kzoo MNO and DNO) from 6/6:30pm

Moms' Night Out (MNO) and Dads' Night Out (DNO) give parents the opportunity to share experiences and support over dinner with others raising children with Down syndrome. DSAWM hosts MNO in three locations: Lakeshore (Grand Haven/Muskegon), Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. DNO meets in Grand Rapids. DSAWM pays for first-time attendees meals (excluding alcohol).

Dates will be announced soon. Parents are encouraged to join the Michigan Parents group and Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome group on Facebook as parent coordinators often share details there.
Lakeshore Baby Sign Language
TLP speech playgroup
Who: Members aged 5 and younger
When: Saturdays, March 7 - 28 from 10-10:45am

Join parent and LMSW Sarah at EnCourage Counseling this spring for Baby Sign Language. With just a few simple signs from American Sign Language, you can start communicating with your child – even before (s)he starts to talk! Signing is fun, easy to do, and great for your child’s development! Siblings will be welcomed as space allows.

OT Group
Who: Younger members (specific age range TBD)
Where: DSAWM office
When: TBD (typically meets on Saturdays in February/March)

GVSU will join us again this spring to lead an OT group for younger members. Members will work on skills including fine and gross motor, socialization, and sensory modulation and discrimination in a fun and playful environment.

World Down Syndrome Day Dance
Who: Everyone!
When: Saturday, March 21 from 6-8pm

DSAWM members, their family, friends, and the community are invited to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with us at our annual Rock Your Socks Dance. This year's event is '90s themed and will feature snacks, crafts, a photo booth, and, of course, dancing!

Winners Cup Benefit
Who: Anyone aged 21+
When: Saturday May 2 from 5pm-midnight

In 2004, the Winners Cup Benefit was created to raise funding for the Down syndrome community in West Michigan. Proceeds from the annual Kentucky Derby party and auction benefit the Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan Foundation (DSAWMF), which helps to fund the vital supports, programs and services provided by the DSAWM.
