A Note from Andres

Good Morning, Mason District,

I know many of us are still dealing with snow-covered streets and difficult travel. I ask that you please remain patient, limit travel whenever possible, and direct any specific road or service questions to VDOT Customer Service so crews can respond as efficiently as possible.

I also want to share that this extreme cold has caused a surge in neighbors seeking warmth and safety at Bailey’s Shelter. Thanks to World Central Kitchen and local restaurant Peruvian Brothers, 200 hot meals were delivered right when they were needed most—but our shelters and host churches are still under strain.

If you’re able, please consider donating food or giving to support meals, staffing, and essential supplies. More details can be found below.

Additionally, please consider helping a neighbor with shoveling—especially seniors or those with disabilities. Moments like this truly show the strength of our community. We are all in this together, and we knew this storm would be a tough one.

In case of an emergency, call 911. For road conditions or plowing updates, please contact VDOT Customer Service.

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and willingness to look out for one another. Please stay safe, stay warm, and limit travel. VDOT crews are working hard to restore safe conditions across Mason District, the county, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Sincerely,

Andres Jimenez

Frequently Asked Questions

Still Haven’t Seen a Plow in Your Neighborhood?

VDOT prioritizes the most heavily traveled roads first. Cul-de-sacs and pipestems with very low traffic volumes are generally treated last.

Think Your Road Was Missed?

The Snow Is Hard-Packed and Too Difficult to Shovel

Unfortunately, with extreme cold temperatures, there is very little VDOT can do to loosen or remove hard-packed snow and ice. Please use caution and avoid overexertion when shoveling.

Driveway Covered with Snow from a Snowplow?

Unfortunately, there is limited space to place snow. Crews must push snow off the road to the right, which can result in snow piling up on shoulders, gutters, and sometimes in front of driveways.

Who Clears Sidewalks?

In Fairfax County, it is the responsibility of the property owner to clear sidewalks, and we encourage residents to help one another do so safely.

The Plow Came Through, But the Street Is Still Icy or Narrow

In neighborhoods, VDOT crews aim to create a single travel lane (8–10 feet wide). Roads may remain snow-packed or icy and are not typically cleared curb-to-curb. Crews may sand hills, curves, and intersections to improve traction.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for snow removal on most roads in Fairfax County and the state.

With Bailey’s operating beyond normal capacity, FACETS staff are working around the clock to ensure everyone receives food, warmth, and dignified care. Our hypothermia host churches are also under strain as shelter demand continues to rise across the region.
