Coach Spotlight: Liam Russell

When did you start rowing?

I got started with rowing at the club during a summer camp. I joined with a good friend of mine. It was fun and tiring experience! After that, in 2008 I joined my Highschool rowing team (Colonel By Secondary School) and rowed for my highschool. Learning the basics and helping being a part of a great highschool activity. Summer 2009 I joined the junior dev program to hammer in skills I've learned through our highschool and had some great coaches in Robert Tang, Greg Brown and Brett Miller. From Fall 2009 until I graduated highschool I was rowing between the Jr. Men Competitive program and

Colonel By Secondary Schools rowing program. I injured my back during practice in 2011 and was diagnosed with three fractured vertebrae but came back that fall to race in Head of the Rideau and Head of the Fish. Following Spring 2012 i took a break from until 2022 when I became an ARL coach, volunteer coach boat driver and part-time Club coach, part time club rower. I got involved in rowing originally with a friend but stayed for the community and the want to do better every practice.

What was your favourite boat class to row?

My favourite boats to are the double (2x) and a coxed four (4+). The 4+ always helped cement the basics and make sure you and your crew are balanced before seat racing for the 8+. I've always loved the double because being able to work towards racing a small boat is tough but when you are beating the 8+'s in a small boat, it's a great feeling.

When did you start coaching, and why?

I'm a bit new to the coaching scene. I started coaching with the Kelly Green team during the ARL season in 2022 and volunteer coach boat driving for the Club coaches (Janet and Roberta) at the same time. After being away for so long, I had always wanted to come back and be a part of the club in some way. I thought I would dip my toes but ended up diving headfirst back into this club. I was using what I was learning from Janet and Roberta immediately after practice with our ARL crews to help them get the fundamentals I had learned more than a decade prior. I'll be a coach for a lot longer now because besides being a coach for both the club program (who have welcomed me to this program with open arms and I truly appreciate it) and the ARL teams, being able to watch the progression of your athletes over time and seeing them achieve more is an amazing thing and I'll never tire of it.

What is your favourite drill for athletes?

My favourite drill for the athletes are pausing drills. During practice, it is a perfect time to find hand heights and balance, while at the end of practice to use to stretch out those now tightened hamstrings.
