The UB research team has been awarded a $2 million NSF grant to advance sorting methods, and develop processing technologies to make discarded plastic easier to reuse. This effort was recently featured in Forbes.
Faculty Achievements
Empire Innovation Professor and member of UB's RENEW Institute Thomas Thundat has been elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to multi-modal microelectromechanical systems for chemical and biological sensors.
The Director of UB’s RENEW Institute, Amit Goyal, has been appointed to the National Materials and Manufacturing Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. He was also elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Three New Faculty Members
Associate Professor, will lead the Systems Biomedicine and Pharmaceutics Laboratory. The long-term goal for her research program is to develop multiscale mathematical and computational models to enhance understanding of the mechanisms governing tissue remodeling and damage as a result of diseases and infections and to simulate the treatment of those conditions to improve human health.
Assistant Professor, is active in the areas of computational biophysics and molecular biology. Her expertise is on realistic membrane modeling and the study of biological processes at the cellular membrane interface. She is especially interested in the role of lipids as active modulators of cellular processes.
Empire Innovation Professor and a member of UB's RENEW Institute, is an internationally recognized expert on nanoporous materials and chemical separations. One of the most important research directions of Yu's group is CO2 capture and utilization. He is leading or taking part in three Department of Energy (DOE) projects on CO2 capture from both flue gas and air, and two DOE projects on CO2 conversion to liquid fuels.

Mark Swihart is part of a university team which has recently received an $8.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to launch the Center for Hybrid Rocket Exascale Simulation Technology (CHREST) at UB.
