Receive Apology form BC Government

From the Ministry of Attorney General

Government apologizes for historic wrongs against Sons of Freedom - Community programs, research, education, wellness and mental-health supports are part of a $10-million compensation package announced to provide lasting recognition of historical wrongs committed by the Province of B.C. against the Sons of Freedom Doukhobor and their families.

Video News Item "Historically wronged Doukhobors receive apology from B.C. government" - "The province has offered a $10 million compensation package for historic wrongs against the Sons of Freedom Doukhobors. It's in response to it's treatment of children from the Doukhobor community in the West Kootenays between 1953 to 1959, when about 200 children were taken and confined to facilities in New Denver, B.C., over a six-year period. This week, B.C.'s attorney general was in Castlegar and Grand Forks to issue private apologies to the communities. As Corey Bullock reports, it’s a long-awaited recognition from the government."

From The Ombudsperson of BC

Special Report Time to Right The Wrong - "This report focuses on a dark chapter in British Columbia history – this province’s apprehension of approximately 200 children and the confinement of those children at a former tuberculosis sanatorium in New Denver between 1953 and 1959. They were taken from their parents who identified as Sons of Freedom Doukhobors and who opposed government polices and regulations. In 1999 our office investigated these events and found what happened to these children “unjust and oppressive.” We called on government to apologize and compensate those who were, by then,

adults."

Article Kokanee Comeback: Insights from a Kootenay Angler and Biologist - "Kokanee salmon have been a vital part of the Kootenay Lake food chain for roughly 9500 years, when Bonnington Falls formed and created a migration barrier, cutting sockeye ancestors off from the Columbia River and, ultimately, the Pacific Ocean. But for a host of reasons, some known, some not, kokanee numbers in the main body of Kootenay Lake have dropped dramatically. In recent years, 95 percent of kokanee fry don’t survive a year due to a predator-prey imbalance in the lake, resulting from their overconsumption by Gerrard rainbow trout and bull trout."

Neufeld and other Ministry staff have been hosting annual local public meetings to provide an update on Kootenay Lake recovery, with upcoming meetings in late February. Concerned and curious residents are encouraged to attend, learn more and ask questions about the fish that means so much to so many.

An evening presentations will take place on: Monday, February 26th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Balfour Community Hall

Ungulates, Coyotes and Raccoons - Early 2024 at Six Mile - Three ungulates in these videos! Ungulates are animals with hooves. The three ungulates in these clips are also ruminants. - animals that can eat a variety of plants due to their complicated stomach (s) system. Because of this digestive system and amazingly efficient teeth, they can digest the plants still available to them in winter. White-tailed Deer, Mule Deer and Elk (Wapiti) herds wandered by the trail cams at Six Mile (Nelson B,C,) in early 2024. Not to be forgotten are the coyotes and raccoons that were caught on camera as well. Trail cam videos from January and February 2024.

From Nelson Museum, Archives and Gallery

Turret Sessions Season 1: Josephine PakootasNelson Museum, Archives & Gallery Turret Performance Series is a sonic reimagining of the historic turret in the heritage Post Office and former City Hall building. This film contains scenes where alcohol and sexual violence are discussed. Viewer discretion is advised. Josephine Pakootas stands as a strong voice from the Wenatchi, Entiat, and Moses bands of the Colville Tribe. Through her art, she is an unwavering guardian of her culture, using her work to illuminate the experiences of her people. Her latest poem, a powerful five-minute video, bravely confronts the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) and shares her personal ordeal with sexual violence—a story that resonates with the unspoken pain of many.

Jo Law Going In for Cancer Treatment

Jo Law is organizing this fundraiser.

Hi everyone, my name is Jo Law and I’m raising funds to help assist with bills while I am away receiving cancer treatment in Kelowna.

Life really comes at you fast. To my utter disbelief, I was diagnosed with cancer just a few days ago and as a result need to move to Kelowna immediately for 7 weeks to receive a pretty intense schedule of radiation and chemotherapy. It’s a lot for me right now. The folks at BC Cancer have been lovely and thankfully treatments and lodging are covered. However, my partner Dave and I will be missing work during this time and therefore, I humbly call on our community to help with financial assistance towards 3 months of bills so we may focus on successfully navigating treatment & healing.

We thank you so much for taking the time to read this and wish you a most excellent day :)

With Deep Gratitude,

Jo

Support

J Greg Walter’s Battle Against Melanoma

Aggie Koop is organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Gregory Walter.

Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters,

In our vibrant community of Nelson, in the Kootenays, J Greg Walter (Greg) is a well-known local musician and entertainer who's been courageously facing a challenging battle against metastatic melanoma.

A year ago, Greg received the diagnosis of melanoma, initially presenting in his leg. Despite his resilience and optimism, this aggressive cancer has spread to multiple organs, profoundly impacting his health and livelihood.

Your generous contributions will directly alleviate the financial burden that Greg faces. The funds will predominantly cover the overwhelming costs associated with his medical care, including frequent travels to Trail BC for procedures and appointments, as well as expenses related to tests, scans, and treatments in Kelowna BC. Additionally, these funds will aid in compensating for the income lost due to Greg’s inability to consistently work during these challenging times.

Greg's Gratitude:

Your support, whether through donations or simply by sharing this fundraiser, holds immense significance for Greg. Any contribution made, regardless of its size, is received with gratitude and deep appreciation, as it will help to alleviate the financial stress this cancer has caused.

Support Laura Emmert's Recovery

Lucas Myers is organizing this fundraiser.

On October 17, my 79 year old mom, Laura Emmert, had a fall in her house. Thankfully, the parents of a couple of the kids that she had in her preschool were there to immediately attend to her and a neighbor was able to be with her in the ambulance. She hit her head really hard, has no memory of the accident, and has spent the last couple of weeks in the hospital with a minor skull fracture, a brain bleed and serious concussion symptoms. There were other medical issues exacerbated by the head injury. She recently has come home and is now recovering surrounded by her plants and pets. As with any concussion, we don’t know how long the recovery will take or if there will be any lingering symptoms, but she lived a very healthy, active life, so we are hoping that things will resolve positively. However, because of the uncertainty around the healing process, she has made the decision to not continue her preschool for the rest of the school year, and, considering that she was planning to retire at the end of this year, it means that she is effectively retiring from being a childcare provider.

Reach Out in the Kootenays

The unfortunate truth is that lots of people in our west Kootenay community WANT therapy but just can't afford it.

Reach Out is a platform that helps financially-challenged people to access low/no-cost counselling in the west Kootenays.

Alon Gelcer is organizing this fundraiser.

100% of your funds go to supporting those in need. No admin fees - it is run entirely by volunteer administration. No one profits. No one is paid except the therapists that donate most of their time.

For almost two years now, we have remained privately funded, but Reach Out is becoming increasingly popular and is projected to run out of funds sometime this winter.

Can you help us keep this community service alive?

By Abby Wilson

Hansella Fundraiser - "Hansella was a young black bear who sadly lost her life in January 2024 when conservation officials in Nelson, BC deemed her unwell to survive the winter. Hansella’s story is very sad as she had been orphaned by conservation officials in September 2022, and she was followed with much concern by the community as she tried to make it through the winter alone. I’ve painted Hansella going forward into the spring that she’ll never see. The Hansella Fundraiser will run for the month of February 2024. All profits from the original painting and art prints will be donated, with the donation split 50/50 between the Ursa Project in Nelson, BC and the Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter."
