WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY

January 3rd, 2025

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Watch from 7:00 am on Sunday, January 5th, until 12:00 pm on Monday, January 6th. Snow accumulations for this event are currently predicted to range from 8 to 12 inches before tapering off. Confidence in this storm is growing but many factors remain unknown which could alter the precipitation levels and types. Temperatures in the teens are anticipated to be a contributing factor to inclement weather and travel conditions.

Our team continues to closely monitor the forecast and are preparing for a substantial snow event. Fort Wright Public Work Crews are expected to report for duty in the early hours of Sunday morning and will work continuously throughout the event. With only three full-time employees and some part-time help from other departments, they are responsible for maintaining over 100 streets that amount to nearly 80 miles of roadway including from time to time some very heavily traveled state roads such as KY 17, Highland Pike, and Dixie Highway. Your cooperation in making their job safer, easier, and more efficient is much appreciated!

Per NWS, hazards that could occur during this event include: Heavy Snow, Ice, and Drifting Winds. Hazardous travel conditions are expected to develop due to slippery roadways as a result of snow, ice, winds, and below freezing temperatures.

Due to limited parking availability in many neighborhoods within the Fort Wright Community we will NOT BE ISSUING A SNOW EMERGENCY UNTIL ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. As more information becomes available and the situation changes, conditions may warrant a snow emergency be issued. If that is the case, we will send out notifications via the media, social media and email. Please stay tuned for more information and be prepared to act accordingly quickly.

We encourage everyone who has access to off street parking to remove their parked vehicles from the street in preparation for this impending snow event. Vehicles parked on the street pose a hazard to ALL emergency vehicles and their operators, and may delay the timely treatment of roadways impacted by snow and ice. Please plan ahead and make arrangements now to park your vehicle(s) at an OFF STREET location early Sunday AM until Tuesday AM in preparation for inclement weather. Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated and essential for the safety of our staff and the protection of your property.

We recommend that all residents know the risks associated with Severe Winter Weather and have in place winter weather emergency plans. Checks batteries in flashlights, radios, and other devices. Fully charge cell phones. Stock up on water and non-perishable food items. If you have a generator, make sure it is working properly and that you are familiar with using it safely. Be a good neighbor and offer assistance to elderly neighbors and other "at-risk" individuals within your vicinity.

Stay tuned for more information and updates.

Thank you - Be Safe!
