The Herrity Report: Your Voice in Fairfax County

January 3, 2025

Winter Weather Information

Fairfax County is forecasted to get our first significant snow this weekend, with the heaviest snowfall arriving Sunday night into Monday. Be sure to fill up on gas, charge your electronic devices and check on elderly neighbors before the snowstorm. Snow is expected to impact the Monday morning commute, schools and could impact power lines throughout the day Monday.

Conditions are expected to vary widely across the County.

Below are details about closures, power outages, recommendations, and resources to use which include important links and phone numbers in the event of emergencies. Additionally, you can keep up to date and get emergency alerts at the County's emergency blog.

Recommendations During Inclement Weather

Inclement Weather Recommendations:

  • Be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least three days in case roads are blocked and/or there are power outages. Make sure you have at least a three-day supply of food that does not require electricity to prepare and at least a gallon of water for each person for each day.

  • Have a battery-powered and/or hand-crank radio and flashlight extra batteries for emergency information. Listen to local weather forecasts and instructions from county or state officials.

  • It is helpful to clean-up crews that plow our roads if you can park your vehicles in your driveways. If you must park on the road - park on the side of the road with the odd numbers so plows can clear most of the road.

Snow Days for School

Snow Days for Fairfax County Public Schools:

This year, the school system has allotted 11 days for actual snow days. After these 11 days have been used, the school system plans to provide for virtual lesson including both synchronous instruction (teach-led) and asynchronous instruction (independent). The school system will evaluate the situation and notify residents through the FCPS website, Twitter, Facebook, email, text messages, and the local media.
