Be Prepared for Winter Weather

During its November 12 meeting, the Herndon Town Council amended the Town Code to make clear that property owners or tenants must remove snow from sidewalks along their property within 24 hours after a snowfall. The change clarifies that snow is treated the same as any other obstruction on a sidewalk, which the existing code already required owners or tenants to remove.

Tips for clearing snow from sidewalks:

  • START EARLY – Begin clearing snow as soon as possible after it stops falling. Fresh snow is lighter and easier to remove than packed or icy snow.
  • USE THE RIGHT SHOVEL – A sturdy, ergonomic snow shovel helps reduce strain and makes the job easier.
  • PUSH, DON'T LIFT– Whenever you can, push the snow to the side instead of lifting it to avoid back injuries.
  • DRESS WARMLY AND TAKE BREAKS– Wear layers and gloves, and pace yourself to avoid overexertion.
  • APPLY ICE MELT OR SAND– After shoveling, spread salt, ice melt, sand, sugar beet juice, or calcium magnesium acetate to prevent slippery spots. Non-clumping kitty litter or coffee grounds can also add grip but don’t melt ice.

If youre able, please help keep sidewalks clear for neighbors who can’t, especially seniors or people with disabilities.
