Disease of the Month

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

RSV usually causes mild symptoms but quickly can turn severe, resulting in hospitalization. Adults age 70+ and infants younger than 6 months are at the highest risk.

Symptoms

Symptoms start 4-6 days after exposure and are similar to the flu or common cold:

  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing and/or rapid breathing
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fever
  • Blue coloring of skin (lips and fingers)

How to Prevent

Follow everyday actions to prevent the spread of RSV and other respiratory illnesses, including frequent handwashing, disinfection of frequently touched surfaces, staying home when sick, and avoiding contact with people who are ill. An RSV vaccine is available for people age 50 and older, as well as infants and mothers during pregnancy.
