BLACK HISTORY MONTH
The Civil Rights Movement and Head Start's beginnings are deeply intertwined and continue to play out in programs nation-wide. Head Start did and continues to create long-lasting equitable opportunities for Black parents and their young children. We have gratitude for Black mothers' involvement in the program and their contribution to its long-lasting success.
Black History Month: A Reflection on Head Start History

Often when we think about Head Start's early history, we recall the White House Rose Garden Ceremonyon May 18, 1965 in which President Johnson announced Project Head Start. But this was only the beginning.

Updates to our racial justice growth: As an agency operating for 50+ years in the persistently extreme racially disparate Dane County, we have deep work ahead of us. We acknowledge and are working to eliminate structural racism in the policies and practices embedded in our agency's history. This work is still in its infancy against centuries of racial inequalities but imperative to better serve enrolled families, the staff we employ, and hopefully the broader early education and Head Start sector.

This month, staff began planning their facilitation sessions for the ongoing BIPOC and White affinity focus groups. These groups are opportunities to create and maintain safe discussions that stimulate personal growth and an agency-wide shift. These discussions will help us get a more complete, in-depth sense of Reach Dane's areas of strength and areas for improvement related to addressing racial inequities in our work and with the populations we serve. Local racial equity consulting group, nINA Collective, continues to partner with us in this next stage of equity work.

A local grassroots social justice group is fundraising to purchase age-appropriate book bundles for each of our Reach Dane sites, through March 1. These books will include BIPOC-led characters or Black history and purchased by a local Black Woman-owned book store, Itty Bitty Bookstore, which recently opened in Stoughton.
PROTECT THE POD
Full-day child care programs are a critical service
Access to child care can help determine a family's socio-economic advancement. These programs allow parents to maintain employment and financial stability. This stability is critical for low-income parents to escape poverty.

Your donation to this valuable program allows low-income families to receive high-quality, 5-out-of-5 star rated childcare.

Thank you to the many individuals that have donated to this valuable program!

PANDEMIC UPDATES
Virtual Programming

We will continue with virtual instruction and limited in-person classrooms in our part-year Madison programs through the end of the program year. Our agency follows the MMSD school closure policy yet recognizes the unique hardships that our site closures have to the families we serve.

The children and families we serve are disproportionately impacted by Covid, and their health and safety are our priority. Poverty makes physical distancing very challenging and many of our parents are front-line workers. Data also shows that racial and ethnic minority groups are at increased risk from Covid, which includes close to 80% of our Reach Dane families. Even with our strict health/safety measures in place, bringing children back into the classroom increases the risk of potential exposure for both our children and their families.

The families enrolled in virtual programming continue to receive food and supply delivery, educational kits, ongoing communication from classroom staff, and social-emotional support. Families interested in our services are encouraged to enroll now to secure a spot for Fall 4k once we move to in-person.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Reach Dane classroom and non-classroom staff qualify for Tier1B, and a small portion of staff qualified for Tier1A phase of the COVID-19 vaccination. Our agency continues to follow the guidelines given by Public Health Madison and Dane County and supply our staff with information surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine. We recognize the distrust in the health system present in the BIPOC community and we continue to pool resources that include BIPOC providers and trusted discussions about the process at large.

All programmatic and administrative guidelines are updated to follow the rapidly-evolving and complex nature of the pandemic.
