Black Gold and In Between Artists Talk with Yo Yo Ma
Arts, Advocacy and Anacostia
November 30 6-9 PM
The Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, in partnership with the YoYo Ma Bach Project and Black owned businesses of Historic Anacostia present: Art, Advocacy and Anacostia a day filled with events for art and music lovers across the city. A special artist talk with world renowned cellist, YoYo Ma will take place in the Chase Black Box Theatre at 7:15PM.

In Between by Tim Davis , is a narrative about the state of being situated somewhere between two extremes or recognized categories. These extremes are the result of a divided America, and the gap is getting larger. This exhibition closely examines housing discrimination, racism, mass incarceration, migration, and their violent effects on Americans. This exhibit runs through January 19, 2019 at Honfluer Gallery at 1241 Good Hope Rd SE.

Black Gold - a group exhibition - celebrates Black Excellence throughout time and space. Uniting figurative and abstract elements, these five artists create vivid representations of Black culture that exist independent of temporal experience. The five local artists selected to be part of this experience are from varied backgrounds but are all equally passionate about their craft and message. This exhibit runs through January 5, 2019 at Vivid Gallery at 1231 Good Hope Rd SE.

Selfies with Santa
Holiday Party
The children of Southeast are writing their wish list and checking it twice. This holiday season can be a hectic time of the year; coming off the heels of Halloween and Thanksgiving, the expectations can often put a lot of pressure on parents and guardians to fulfill kids’ wishes. To relieve some of the pressure, the Anacostia Arts Center has called Santa and his helpers to bring Selfies with Santa back to Historic Anacostia for the 5 th time.
The event will include a Santa photo booth, juggling elves, holiday crafts, caroling, toys and delicious holiday treats.
In addition to the usual festivities, Wicked Uncle , a Maryland based toy company will be dropping by with toys for the kids (while supplies last).

“We have to make sure Santa takes his time in Anacostia. Selfies is free and a lot of fun. It’s great to see all the smiling faces” – Camille Kashaka, Director Anacostia Arts Center.

The Youngs
MahoganyBooks was approached by Camille Kashaka, Director of the Anacostia Arts Center as she searched for a bookstore that would bring a much-needed resource to the residents of Southeast. As quoted in the Washington Post, Kashaka’s D C Dream Day would include a visit to a black owned bookstore, she desired the same option for the youth East of the river.

The Anacostia Arts Center is a visual and performing arts space, encompassing the small business needs of black entrepreneurs. Over 25,000 visitors walk through the doors each year to enjoy music, art, live performances and shopping, all while supporting black business owners and creatives.

MahoganyBooks, opened on Black Friday 2017 in the Anacostia Arts Center adding to the full roster of other Black owned businesses within the space. As external influences on the commercial and residential development of the neighborhood aim to change the essence of Anacostia, the Black owned businesses within the Arts Center continue to grow; they prove that small business ownership is possible and profitable.
