If you aren't already feeling the impacts from winter weather, you might be soon. This week, different parts of Texas will see freezing temperatures, snow storms, or icy conditions.
It's never too late to get ready for winter weather—even if winter has already arrived where you live. Below are some of the steps you can take to be winter ready.
-
Stay informed: It's important to know ahead of time if winter weather will impact you. To stay informed and up-to-date, you can monitor the weather forecast or sign up for weather alerts. Not sure about what alerts are right for you? See our weather alerts tips.
-
Stock up: If winter weather hits and you have to stay home, make sure you have what you need to get by. This includes food and water, medications, warm clothes, pet supplies, and more.
-
Heat: If it's freezing and your furnace stops working, it can be a good idea to have additional heat sources, like an electric- or propane-powered heater, or a fireplace. Just make sure you follow the manufacturer's guidelines and have appropriate safety measures in place.
-
Back-up power: Think about all the things you rely on daily that require electricity—a cell phone, a wheelchair, a refrigerator, etc. If the power goes out, then what? Try to have back-up power for the things you need.
-
Your info: If you have to leave suddenly or experience an emergency at home, it can help to have all of your important information in one place. Create your own Emergency Ready Sheet so your information stays with you at all times.
