Winter is on the Way

Many parts of Washington are already beginning to experience winter weather; however, there is still time to prevent property loss due to winter conditions. Please read through the following guidelines and reach out to your risk manager Mark Sherwood at msherwood@chooseclear.com for additional guidance on how to implement changes to help weather-proof your facilities, systems, and vehicles.

Risk Management Reminders

Prevent Freezing Pipes

• Ensure all water shutoff valves function properly and their locations are known
• Ensure thermostats are set to a minimum of 65 degrees Fahrenheit
• Over long breaks such as weekends or holidays, designate someone to check buildings
• During a freeze event, allow faucets to drip and check facilities every three to four hours
• If your facility is equipped with water damage sensors, ensure designated contacts are ready to receive and respond to alerts

Snow Load on Roofs

• Assess the pitch of your roof to determine potential snow removal requirements
• Determine the snow load rating for your roof
• Provide this information to maintenance personnel for visually gauging the approximate weight of snow and ice accumulations
• Continuously monitor snow and ice accumulations
• Closely monitor weather forecasts for expected precipitation levels and respond accordingly
• Implement snow and ice removal procedures when needed
