December Holiday Closures:

Winter Outdoor Play

Getting kids outside is not only important for their physical development and health, it's also important for their emotional health! Outdoor, unstructured active play gives kids the opportunity to use their imaginations, practice social skills, problem solve, and promotes creativity. Also, research shows that kids who spend more time outside have better learning outcomes, more positive behavior, and sleep better!

Even knowing all these benefits, it can be hard to make time for outdoor play, especially as the weather gets colder and it gets dark so early.

Here are some suggestions to get your family outside, even during the winter months:

  • Collect leaves and make rubbings
  • Go on a scavenger hunt
  • Make homemade bird feeders
  • Go geocaching
  • Play kickball or soccer
  • Embrace mud play
  • Go for a hike
  • Blow bubbles outside on a freezing day and see what happens
  • Play freeze tag
  • Chalk mural
  • Play catch

Here are a few ideas to embrace the outdoors during the holidays:

  • Go for a holiday light walk
  • Visit the Georgetown Square at night
  • Make an elf house
  • Go on a holiday decoration scavenger hunt

TGP Happenings

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday -- a very special day of generosity, kindness, and giving back to our community.

The Georgetown Project has a GivingTuesday goal of $20,000 this year to expand our work with young children and families. Your generosity will help create a new early learning playground for our Bridges to Growth Parent Center, located at Georgetown’s Carver Center for Families.

These funds will go toward purchasing playground equipment, sand boxes, picnic tables and much more geared specifically for the little ones and their parents visiting the center for services. Thanks to an in-kind gift from Georgetown Health Foundation, the play area will be safety fenced.

We know that healthy development in the first few years are key to lifelong physical, social, and emotional health, and active play outside is essential. Research shows that children who play outdoors regularly are happier, healthier, and stronger.

Join us to support the smallest members of our community by making a donation, spreading the word on social media, or volunteering your time.

News from the NEST

Love abounds this November.

Following our call for donations in last month’s newsletter, we’ve received coats, socks, snacks and more…including an absolutely MASSIVE non-perishable donation from Pope Materials Inc. Our NESTlings were in awe at the number of snacks they could choose from once everything was sorted into our food pantry.

To mark the beginning of Thanksgiving break, NEST volunteers hosted a Friendsgiving dinner, which was filled with a sense of community and tradition. Students were able to share what they were thankful for while also digging into holiday classics, like turkey, green bean casserole and mashed potatoes.

Making the evening even more special, they also got to choose a book and a cozy blanket to take home with them for the weeklong holiday. This was made possible by a Sun City group called “Books and a Blanket,” which aims to promote literacy for children and young adults.

A huge part of my job includes working to ensure students feel cared for and comfortable, which can become difficult over school breaks, during which the NEST is closed and we have little to no contact with kiddos. This heartfelt donation certainly helped put my mind at ease, as students got to take a little coziness home with them.

We’re seeing a lot of new faces at the NEST, which is really exciting. My coworker asked one of our newest, regular attending students — an absolutely adorable freshmen — why they like coming here so much. Their answer was something along these lines:

“It’s a really good environment and it’s so much fun. We get to eat dinner all together and play games. And if you do something wrong or are feeling down, the adults here will stop and just talk to you about it. And that’s not always what happens with grown-ups.”

Thank you, a million times over, to everyone who helps make the NEST such a welcoming space for students.
