Do I need to winterize my outboard? |
When it comes to winterizing, there’s a lot of conflicting information out there. Most of us who have owned a stern drive or straight inboard engine know that winterizing is essential to protect your investment. |
As an outboard owner, you may have heard that they don’t require winterizing since the water drains out when they’re pulled from the water. While it’s true that a significant portion of water drains out, there’s an important point to consider: small-diameter hoses that deliver cooling water (often salt water) to various components of the fuel and electrical systems. If water remains in those components and freezes, it will expand and cause damage. We see this happen every year—even with outboards stored in the Boatel. |

All outboard manufacturers recommend winterizing in areas where freezing temperatures are expected. It only takes one day and night of freezing weather to cause serious damage to your motor. Winterizing also protects the engine during extended periods of non-use by adding heavy-duty lubrication and fuel treatment. |
