for everyone!

Snowshoeing in beautiful winter landscapes gives the body and soul tremendous well-being. The simplicity of practicing this sport makes it the easiest of all winter sports, because if you can walk, you can snowshoe.
We know, that here in North America Native American tribes mostly in Eastern Canada, “invented” snowshoes a long time to just better “get around in snow” and perfected winter travel by snow shoe. The first settlers took notice, learned and followed suit.
Primitive snowshoes were of course discovered in other “snowy” parts of the world as well: Siberia, Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Japan and St. Lawrance Island, just to name a few.
The Army and the snowshoes
For the Army, snowshoes were not a vital element, however the efficiency of snowshoes was revealed thanks to a military genius and a master of the guerrilla: Pierre Lemoyne d'Iberville.
It is told that January 1666, the French Governor De Courcelles left from Québec with 500 men on snowshoes along the St. Lawrence and the Richelieu, crossing the Champlain and Georges lakes for a march of 1,000 miles.
Modern times and the snowshoe
New Materials, like Aluminum allowed to create new forms and lightness and harnesses made of olefin provided more stable support for the foot. The invention of the pivot system allowed for an efficient step. The catch fasteners are similar to the system used on snowboard bindings and allow precise adjustments and easy maintenance.
Many styles are available now to choose from specifically for women, men and children, and prices vary greatly.
So, if you don’t feel like doing “the downhill thing” - try snowshoeing, its fun and easy, as individual or in a group.
And in case you assume snowshoeing is nor a calorie burner: Snowshowing burns between 350 and 950 calories per hour….if you care to know.
