First Career Stakes Victory for Ninja Star in Sunshine Turf (Tapeta)

Strategically navigated through traffic in the far turn by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., Ninja Star quickened in the stretch to run down Anamnestic and win the $75,000 Sunshine Turf at Gulfstream Park Saturday. Moved off the grass to the synthetic course, the Sunshine Turf featured eight Florida-bred 4-year-olds and older going a mile-and-a-sixteenth.

Damon's Mound Returns Off Lay-Off To Take Sunshine Sprint

Making his first start in more than a year, Cliff and Michele Love's Damon's Mound produced a resilient victory in the $75,000 Sunshine Sprint at Gulfstream Park Saturday. Making his first start for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Damon's Mound bested four other Florida-breds, 4-years-old and older over six furlongs.

This Day in Florida Thoroughbred History - Ta Wee Wins 1969 Jasmine Stakes at Hialeah

JANUARY 18, 1969—On her way to being named the champion sprinter of 1969, Florida-bred Ta Wee won the second division of the $27,050 Jasmine Stakes against 11 rivals at Hialeah in her first start of the year. Ridden to victory by John Rotz, the half-sister to Dr. Fager led from the start through fractions of :22 1/5, :45 1/5 before drawing off in the stretch to win by three lengths “with complete authority” according to the Daily Racing Form chart.

Jockey Paco Lopez Conditionally Reinstated After Indefinite Suspension

According to a Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority statement, HISA announced today that jockey Paco Lopez will be reinstated on a conditional basis effective Jan. 23. Lopez was suspended indefinitely on Dec. 4 for striking a horse with a riding crop in a manner in violation of HISA’s rules.
