Unbeaten Florida-bred Taj Mahal puts his perfect record on the line against a familiar group of fellow 3-year-olds in the one-mile Federico Tesio at Laurel Race Course Saturday.

This handsome Florida-bred colt born April 14 is a half-brother to Grade 1-winning millionaire Florida-bred Dorth Vader. Bred by John Ropes, the colt is by Ocala Stud’s freshman stallion Roadster and is standing next to his dam, Hardcore Candy, at Ropes’ Rosegrove Farm in Ocala.

This colt is the eleventh foal produced by Hardcore Candy, a stakes-placed daughter of Yonaguska, who is a half-sister to stakes-winner Chestnut Lady. Hardcore Candy has five winners from eight starters and her unraced 2-year-old daughter by Girvin, Revenge of the Sis, was a $500,000 purchase by CJ Thoroughbreds and John Ropes at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She also has an unnamed yearling filly by Girvin.

The Florida Legislature moved $5 million into racetrack purses for Florida-bred racehorses in 2026 – $4 million to Gulfstream Park and $1 million to Tampa Bay Downs.

Some of that state funding was already flowing in prior years. After accounting for preexisting allocations and reserves, the net new investment is $4.8 million at Gulfstream Park and $536,000 at Tampa Bay Downs.
