Speed Boat Beach is FTBOA Florida-bred Horse of the Year, Heysek's Caperlane Farm Takes Home Five Trophies

Ocala, FL-Speed Boat Beach was named the 2023 Florida-bred Horse of the Year in a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association board of directors and announced at the FTBOA Awards Gala held Monday night at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala.

A filly by first crop sire Caracaro went for $775,000 to lead the first day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale Tuesday while a Florida-bred colt by Global Campaign sold for $650,000.

Retired physician turned racehorse owner and breeder, Jim Chicklo, truly enjoys every aspect of his current horse business. However, he unexpectedly found himself in the racehorse world later in life. "I really didn't have much exposure to horses before I was in my mid-fifties," Chicklo said.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Confirmed in Marion County

According to the Equine Disease Communication Center and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis was confirmed at a private facility in Marion County, Fla., on April 16. No quarantine has been issued.


Only the animals under quarantine have additional travel restrictions. The horse under quarantine is not allowed to leave the premises.
