Senate Passes Abortion Ban in State Employee Insurance Plans
On a vote of 18 to 14, the Senate passed
Assembly Bill 128
(Rep. Andr
é
Jacque, R-De Pere), which prohibits Wisconsin's
Group Insurance Board from entering into any contract with respect to a group health insurance plan or providing a group health insurance plan on a self-insured basis if, with certain exceptions, the plan provides abortion services to state employees under the Wisconsin Retirement System. The WCC
testified
in support of the bill, which now awaits the Governor's action.
Assembly Passes Rent-to-Own Bills
On February 22, by a vote of 59 to 35, the Assembly passed an amended
Assembly Bill 759
(Rep. Warren Petryk, R-Eleva), which removes regulation of rent-to-own (RTO) transactions from the Wisconsin Consumer Act (WCA). The bill now goes to the Senate. The WCC
testified
against the bill.
Assembly Approves Suicide Prevention Grant
By a unanimous vote, the Assembly passed Assembly Bill 938, which requires the Department of Public Instruction to provide $220,000 to the Center for Suicide Awareness, Inc. to operate a text-based suicide prevention service. The bill now goes to the Senate. The WCC registered in support.
