On Oct. 21, the State of Wisconsin was awarded a $1 million Statewide Economic Development Planning grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration to chart a path toward EV adoption in Wisconsin. In partnership with the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation & the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Wisconsin Department of Administration submitted a winning proposal focused on analysis & planning to accelerate electric vehicle adoption & carbon reduction while fueling the development of Wisconsin’s EV & charging station manufacturing. Announced on October 15, 2021, the 2021 Energy Innovation Grant has $10 million available for renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy planning projects. Applications are due Jan.14, 2022. An informational Webinar is scheduled for Nov. 10, with the last date to submit questions and request clarification scheduled for Dec. 10. Awards will be announced in March 2022. The Wisconsin Environmental Equity Tool is a comprehensive environmental justice screening and mapping tool that is being developed by four state agencies in consultation with other organizations and community members. There are several ways to share your experiences and ideas, including virtual listening sessions set for the first week of November. Learn more

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm in September introduced Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program), a new pilot initiative to support communities currently experiencing either direct environmental justice impacts or direct economic impacts from a shift away from historical reliance on fossil fuels. Under this pilot initiative, DOE will provide technical assistance services valued at up to a total of $16 million to support 24-36 communities to develop their own community-driven clean energy transition approach. Applicants must register to apply for this opportunity. Once registered, applicants will receive access to apply. The application deadline is Dec. 17, 2021 at 5 p.m. Eastern. October’s falling temperatures and leaves bring with them not only the realization that harsh Wisconsin winters are on the way, but also the flavor of the month, pumpkin spice. We use analogy of the “flavor of the month” for fuels, technologies and vehicles in the sustainable transportation realm, too. While some options may get more attention than others, it is important to remember that there are many long-standing options playing a role in reducing tailpipe emissions and supporting domestic fuels. One popular option for Wisconsin fleets is compressed natural gas (CNG) and which provides excellent greenhouse gas emission reductions for heavy duty applications. Electricity can be used to power all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles directly from the power grid. Vehicles running on electricity produce no tailpipe emissions. The only emissions that can be attributed to electric vehicles are those generated in the production process at the power plant. The electric grid is an easily accessible driving energy. Electricity used to power vehicles is generally provided by the electricity grid and stored in the vehicle’s batteries. Learn more on our Website
