Wisconsin Clean Cities Team Attended 2023 Work Truck Week

Work Truck Week® 2023 was back to full strength as a verified 14,885 industry professionals gathered at Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis March 7–10 for North America’s largest work truck event. Attendance returned to pre-pandemic levels, setting a new record with a 17% increase over the 2022 event. Green Truck Summit, NTEA’s full-day advanced fuels and vehicle technology conference, was sold out for the second year in a row, with nearly 1,000 attendees.

Work Truck Week, which includes The Work Truck Show®, Green Truck Summit and Ride & Drive, has been produced annually by NTEA – The Association for the Work Truck Industry since 2000. The event was held virtually in 2021.

WCC Part of Wisconsin Technology Association Panel

Lorrie Lisek, Executive Director for Wisconsin Clean Cities, took part in a panel discussion recently for the WTA-Wisconsin Technology Association "Innovation - Electric Vehicles" presentation.

Attendees heard about the innovations coming from the Electric Vehicle space. Doug Denicola provided an overview of the EV landscape. Kaleb Vander Wiele from WISDOT spoke on the Wisconsin EV Infrastructure Plan. Also a panel featured leaders from Wisconsin Clean Cities members Pieper Electric, Madison Gas & Electric, and the City of Madison Fleet. The panel discussed the positive movement the EV industry has made, as well as the many challenges it is still facing.

Within range? Potential buyers weigh incentives and Wisconsin's charging infrastructure amid EV transition

Cost, range anxiety and regulations may hinder switch to electric vehicles.

George Bussey is already sold on electric vehicles. On a gray winter day, he navigates the snow-covered streets of Bayfield in his 2021 Chevy Bolt. Bussey, who lives just south of Ashland, said he’s already put about 17,000 miles on the four-door hatchback since he and his wife Dorota bought it two years ago.

"I just love this car," Bussey said. "This is my favorite car of all the cars I've had ... going all the way back to my used 1957 Cadillac."

Compared to a gas-powered engine, it runs quietly. And Bussey, 74, has also been happy with its range. At its best, the Bolt can go about 250 miles on a full charge. It also was the right price, he said, at about $30,000.

In Wisconsin, electric cars represent fewer than 1 percent of the more than 6.1 million vehicles on the road. Even so, the number of EVs is growing. The state registered 13,893 electric vehicles last year — an increase of more than 53 percent from 2021. Nationally, electric vehicles made up nearly 6 percent of new car sales last year. President Joe Biden has set a goal for EVs to make up half of all new car sales by the end of the decade.

U.S. Gain and Entech Solutions Bring Renewable Energy to a Wisconsin Dairy Digester

U.S. Gain, a leader in the development and distribution of alternative fuel and renewable energy, is excited to share its first integration of a solar microgrid at its Dallmann East River Dairy digester in Brillion, Wisconsin. This U.S. Gain-owned digester has been producing renewable natural gas (RNG) for the transportation industry since August 2020.

Representing a major step forward for innovation in rural Wisconsin, this project highlights the integration of sustainability progress and energy independence into the farming and renewable natural gas communities. Using solar panels, renewable electricity is generated and used to power day-to-day digester operations. This electricity can also be stored in onsite batteries to be used at night or on cloudy days. Additionally, through onsite combined heat and power (CHP) technology, heat is captured and repurposed to reduce natural gas demand.

30 Years Ago in 1993,

the Clean Cities Coalition Was Founded!

DID YOU KNOW ???

U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities dates back to the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

These laws, which encouraged the production and use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) and the reduction of vehicle emissions, led to the creation of the Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) in 1991.

FUNDING UPDATES

First Round of Funding Announced for Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program (CFI)

The Biden-Harris administration opened applications for the first round of funding for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program

The multi-billion-dollar program will fund electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative-fueling infrastructure in communities across the country and along designated highways, interstates, and major roadways.

This program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will provide $2.5 billion over five years to a wide range of applicants, including cities, counties, local governments, and tribes. The CFI Discretionary Grant Program builds on the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, for which the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published finalized minimum standards earlier this month.

This first round of funding makes up to $700 million from Fiscal Years (FY) 2022 and 2023 funding available to strategically deploy EV charging and other alternative vehicle-fueling infrastructure projects in publicly accessible locations in urban and rural communities, as well as along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs).

Featured Technology: Natural Gas

Natural gas is a domestically produced alternative fuel that is readily available to end-users through the utility infrastructure. It can produce significantly fewer harmful emissions than gasoline or diesel when used in natural gas vehicles.

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbons, predominantly methane (CH4). As delivered through the pipeline system, it also contains hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane and other gases such as nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and water vapor.

Natural gas has a high octane rating and excellent properties for spark-ignited internal combustion engines. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-carcinogenic. It presents no threat to soil, surface water or groundwater.
