Contact list is first step in helping you tell your stories
Across the Wisconsin Conference, we have some great stories to tell. There are innovative outreach projects made possible by Catalyst Grants. Pastors and lay members leading courageously. Work groups like the Creation Care Team bringing about lasting change in congregations and the communities they serve. And creative ministries like the Damascus Project using technology to equip the people of God for service.

Stories like these deserve to be told outside the walls of our churches. So, the Conference communications team has begun to assemble a toolkit to help congregations get the word out about the good work they do. The first step: creation of a list of media contacts across the state, available to Conference congregations.

The list accounts for many of the major online/print outlets across the state, along with Wisconsin Public Radio. However, we need your help building it out. Click here to access the list, and follow the directions to add local online/print, radio and TV outlets that we missed. With your help, the list will grow rapidly.

In the months ahead, we’ll provide some virtual training sessions that will provide more ways to help you tell your stories. Our congregations and people put the “good” in Good News. Let’s make sure our communities hear it.
Virtual summit to explore church in post-pandemic world
This is the virtual meeting we’ve all been waiting for.

The United Church of Christ will host a virtual summit Sept. 19-21 that will examine the ways in the the church evolved during the COVID pandemic. Called “The Space Between: The Emerging Church in a Post-Pandemic World,” the event will feature keynotes by UCC pastors Jacqui Lewis, senior minister for public theology and transformation at Middle Collegiate Church in New York, and Laura Everett, executive director of the Massachusetts Council of Churches, plus TED-style “provocations” by other faith leaders and thinkers. Participants will grapple with questions that include: What did we learn when faced with the need to pivot quickly and still be effectively present as church? How do we need to stretch ourselves? What resources to we need to support our evolution as church.

Register here. Registration is $50. Limited financial assistance is available. Registration deadline is Sept. 15.
Work group to discuss ministry to older adults
The Wisconsin Conference is forming a working group to discuss ministry to older adults. The working group will build on a workshop called “Aging in Trying Times: Isolation and its Mental Health Challenges,” offered during the Conference Annual Meeting in June.
Jan Aerie, a family counselor and gerontologist, will facilitate the group using an “innovative conversations” model designed to address emerging needs. The working group will address issues important to older adults in the church and community. The group will identify a goal that the Wisconsin Conference and congregations can implement in the year ahead. Monthly meetings will be held on Zoom for one year. To join the conversation, contact Conference Minister Franz Rigert or Lisa Hart, associate conference minister for faith formation and justice ministries.

Liturgy celebrates God as a catalyst for action
The Rev. Beth Abbott, pastor of First Congregational UCC in South Milwaukee, has created a “Catalyst Sunday” liturgy that recognizes God’s role as a catalyst for action. The goal is to spur conversations in congregations across the Conference about what local needs to take a chance on by applying for a Catalyst Grant.

I've sensed my clergy colleagues around the Conference are still reeling from the stresses, unknowns, and swift changes of this pandemic time,” Abbott wrote in an email. “For some, our creativity has diminished as a result. I desired to ‘meet us where we are’ and create a complete liturgy for Catalyst Day that is not only easy to set into motion but also fun, participatory, and theologically creative. Use a little, use a lot, or use it as a diving board into wherever God is calling!”

The liturgy is recommended for use on Sept. 11 or on a date of your choice. Click to download the liturgy. The Wisconsin Conference’s Catalyst program provides grants of up to $5,000 to support innovative ministries that push beyond church walls, engaging the wider community in work that’s often aligned with the Conference’s social justice mission. To learn more, email Conference Grants Coordinator Mary Kuenning Gross.
Labor in the Pulpits resources available
Labor Day weekend marks the start of this year’s Labor in the Pulpits/On the Bimah/In the Minbar Program, a monthlong initiative of Worker Justice Wisconsin that calls on faith communities to celebrate the dignity of work and support low-wage and immigrant workers, and commit to advocating for well-paying jobs with hours that allow workers to live full, healthy lives. Worker Justice Wisconsin is a Madison-based nonprofit that brings together faith and labor allies to empower workers.

This year’s theme is “Being Faith Allies,” and faith communities are encouraged to reflect on this question: As people of faith, what is our role in ensuring that low-wage and immigrant workers are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve? Worker Justice Wisconsin offers various ways for congregations to participate, including sharing WJW resources with the community and providing financial support to the organization. To confirm your congregation’s participation, please register here. Visit the WJW website for more information resources to jump-start Labor in the Pulpits in your congregation. Questions? Email WJW’s faith outreach coordinator, Gretchen Baumgardt.
