World Future Day
March 1, 2020

World Future Day is March 1. This will be the seventh year that futurists and the general public will conduct a 24-hour, round-the-world conversation on the future on March 1 at 12 noon in whatever time zone they are in. Each year, total strangers discuss ideas about possible worlds of tomorrow in a relaxed, open, no-agenda conversation. Futures research is shared, collaborations are created, and new friendships are made.

The Millennium Project, a global foresight participatory think tank, will host this conversation on the future in collaboration with the Association of Professional Futurists (APF), Humanity+,  UNESCO's Global Futures Literacy Network, the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS), and the World Futures Studies Federation (WFSF).

Science Fiction and the Future Evolution of the Conscious Mind

Victor Motti, the Director of the World Futures Studies Federation, and myself (Executive Board Member and Fellow of the WFSF) continue our YouTube dialogue series, highlighting my book series on Science Fiction: The Evolutionary Mythology of the Future. Victor has titled the entire dialogue series "Distant Futures of Everything." All the dialogues can be found at Victor Motti's YouTube Channel.

The last five dialogues we have been discussing the "Future Evolution of the Conscious Mind," a topic of great relevance to understanding the true breadth of science fiction, as well the issues of wisdom and future consciousness.

A summary of our latest dialogue is:

We examine Robert Silverberg's great science fiction novel The Son of Man which explores the future diversification of humanity and the rich and colorful possibilities of sex. Rudy Rucker's novel series The Ware Tetralogy is also highly recommended for exploring the techno-enhanced exotic possibilities of sex in the future.

We also talk about the interdisciplinary, naturalistic, and scientific study of consciousness in comparison to spiritual, mystical, and drug-related perspectives on consciousness; mindfulness and the control of consciousness; science fiction as a means to expand, enrich, and inform human consciousness; the major areas explored in science fiction, including space travel, aliens, technology, robots, biological evolution, utopian and dystopian visions, and the big picture cosmic future of everything; the connections between wisdom and heightened future consciousness, and historical and future consciousness; A.G.I. technology serving humanity and Jack Williamson's classic "nightmare" science fiction novel on this theme The Humanoids.

Finally we delve into the evolutionary nature of humanity and human culture; global/planetary consciousness and the interactive qualities of individual minds and human cultures; contact with aliens; the future evolution of a cosmic mind as envisioned in Stapledon's Star Maker; and how science fiction facilitates the evolution of future consciousness.

All these topics are examined in much greater depth in my book series: Science Fiction: The Evolutionary Mythology of the Future.

How can we wisely create our future?

*  *  *  *  *

Wisdom and the Future Research Center on Wikiversity is an evolution of  the newsletter Wisdom and the Future. This site, a dual creation of Lee Beaumont and Tom Lombardo, is an evolutionary forum for contributions from writers and researchers on wisdom and the future.

Please take a look at the research center and give us your thoughts. Is the primary research question
"How can we wisely create our future?" well-formed and relevant? Do you foresee participating as a researcher?

Lee  has agreed to serve as the secretary of the Center. You can always contribute (articles, essays, research, etc.) by sending emails, links, and content to Lee. But in addition, you can add content on your own. There are several advantages to registering as a Wikiversity user and contributor. It is free and easy, and allows tracking of the various changes you make to the site. Lee can help you with this if you have any questions.

The "News" section near the top of the page will be used to announce important new contributions to the site.

We look forward to your ideas and participation.

Tom Lombardo and Lee Beaumont
