May you be inscribed and sealed...
Enjoy and Refine
This evening marks the beginning of Yom Kippur, our day of atonement, when the aspirations of our prayers are to improve ourselves and the world around us. I truly believe we are all here on Earth for 2 main reasons. Number 1, to enjoy all the splendors life has to offer (Family, Food, Friendship, Biking, Hiking, Trekking, Arts, Crafts, Music...whatever is your passion) And Number 2, to make this world a better place for future generations.  This poem (thanks, Neal Elyakin for sharing it) speaks volumes on reminding us to remain grounded while enjoying and refining our world.

My Symphony
William Henry Channing
1810 - 1884

To live content with small means;
To seek elegance rather than luxury,
and refinement rather than fashion;
To be worthy, not respectable,
and wealthy, not rich,
To study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly;
To listen to stars and birds,
To babes and sages, with open heart;
To bear all cheerfully, do all bravely,
Await occasions, hurry never.
To let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious,
grow up through the common.
This is to be my symphony.

Divide and Conquer
Our current adversarial global tone is gaining
prominence as the schism in our world seems more volatile and pronounced than ever. Case in point, though Angela Merkel won her fourth term, the extreme Right Wing party, Alternative für Deutschland, came in 3rd place gaining 13% of the votes and obtaining 19 seats in their parliament (1st time since WWII). The AfD party's main issue is anti-immigration, but they are also against marriage equality and they deny climate change. The growth and strength of this voice gained notoriety with the unexpected Brexit and Trump victories. Divide and conquer fuels their motives rather than dialogue and compromise. This detrimental divisiveness is dangerous for our future.  Free will and free speech should be protected peacefully but closed mindedness and violent actions against those who think differently is becoming normal.  Brett Stephens spoke eloquently about the Dying Art of Disagreement at an Australian awards dinner and the transcript appeared in this week's NYTimes.

Side by Side
Our POTUS seems to thrive on dividing our nation.  Instead of focusing on victims of the Hurricanes that decimated and upended American lives, his main tweets ranted against our inalienable Freedom of Speech.  Bravo to our local Lions Football Team Owner, Martha Ford (and many other owners) for standing side by side with their athletes and upholding their First Amendment Right. I'm certainly no fan of Kim from NK, but #45 is really acting like a Dotard. The well respected Bob Costas said it best "Patriotism means fighting for a better country and living up to the ideals that the flag and the anthem are supposed to represent." and he continued with,  "Those are the patriots we need in this country, now more than ever. The ones unwilling to simply accept the status quo, but to fight for American ideals."  Here is his complete interview:

Jews and Arabs
The (relative) quiet spell from terrorism in Israel was broken this week when a troubled and most likely suicidal Palestinian decided to become a "martyr" by gunning down young Israelis at a West Bank Checkpoint where he killed  Solomon Gavriyah age 20 (Jewish Israeli from Be'er Yaakov) Youssef Ottman , age 25 (Arab Israeli from Abu Gush) and  Or Arish age 25, (Jewish Israeli from Har Adar).  A 4th victim was seriously injured and is recovering at Hadassah Hospital.  The terrorist had a history of domestic abuse as his wife recently left him with the 4 children and moved to Jordan. Of course, Hamas (the government of Gaza) praised his actions.
Terrorist attack   occurred  at Har Hadar near Jerusalem

Day after Day
More than a week after Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Rico, the local (non-voting) Americans are in dire straits with a lack of almost everything (power, phone, food, medicine...hope).  Relief has been way too slow for the desperate people of this suffering island.  There are long lines and long waits at the airport as radar and other logistical equipment was drastically damaged limiting outbound flights to a minimum. It is a humanitarian crisis for the 3.4 million Americans who were in difficult financial times even before 2 hurricanes hit them this month.

Kurds and Israel
There are an estimated 30 million who share a language, culture and ethnicity, yet territorial independence eludes them.  The Iraqi Kurds voted this week to establish Independent Kurdistan yet the Iraqi leader wants them to nix their referendum. And of course, Iran Turkey and Syria also aren't fond of this independence as many Kurds live in their countries too.  The Kurds were brave and victorious against our common enemy ISIS and (for many reasons) deserve a Kurdish homeland which is also supported by the Israeli government.  Aside from Supporting their Rights as the Right Thing to Do, Israel and the Kurds have a long history and a shared struggle.

Kurdish Rally
Moore vs. Jones
He thinks Religion and Government are good bedfellows, that 9/11 was a punishment to Americans for their ungodliness, strongly opposes gays and their lifestyle, doesn't believe Obama was born in the US, objected to Congressman Ellison's use of a Koran for his swearing in ceremony and lastly, he is a fan of Vladimir Putin. Surprisingly, he wasn't even endorsed in his Senatorial race by (his likeminded) POTUS. Even with #45 against him, he won his run-off and now we all pray that Roy Moore loses his general election to the Democratic candidate, Doug Jones to fill the vacant Alabama Senate seat of Jeff Sessions. Hoping and praying Election day of  November 7 flips that seat to the Dems side.

Regression on display
  Women and Cars
"The times they are a changin"... It was announced this week that the Saudi Arabian Royal Family and country's rulers will leap into the 21 century with the acceptance of Female Drivers.  Many believe the young Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman is the "driving force" of this effort to help modernize his kingdom and move their economy past fossil fuel to newer revenue sources.  Or perhaps it was a higher Force found in their school textbooks this week

Yoda and King Faisal

Muslims and Buddhists
Though the women of Saudi Arabia are getting a break, their muslim cousins in Myanmar continue to be persecuted as their leader (Nobel Peace Prize Winner), Aung San Suu Kyi seems to condone the violence and arson by the Myanmar military which is driving the Muslims from this Buddhist country. This is truly ethnic cleansing at work. Since 1982, this Muslim sect called Rohingya have been stripped of their citizenship and their rights have been violated. Nearly 1 Million have been expelled to neighboring Bangladesh. It is a global crisis that the world most address.

Rich and Poor
Not time or info to discuss POTUS' new Tax Plan that was introduced by #45 while his pants were on fire.  Congress needs to hash out the details but it's safe to assume who will benefit most from these IRS adjustments.

Music and History
From the 9th Century to the Present day, the Y-Studs a Cappella group sings a medley of Jewish Songs through the ages from ancient hymns though Israeli songs to pop tunes and everything in between (including Adam Sandler). I think you'll enjoy this musical visit down memory lane. and while you check out this musical list, here is the list of the 100 Jewish Influencer of 2017 (thanks Karen Siegel for sharing).

Truth and Lies
Just 4 days ago at the United Nations a miraculous and stunning speech was delivered by  Mosab Hassan Yousef , the son of a Hamas leader who saw the evils of corruption and violence with his own eyes.  He condemns the Palestinian UN Delegation as an enemy of the Palestinian people. This is a powerful Must Watch
90-second message that brings truth to the constant lies of the hypocritical anti-Israel nations at the UN. Is also fun to see the stunned faces in reaction to his speech.

Wishing you and your family a
Peaceful Shabbat Shalom,
an Easy and Meaningful Fast and
a Sweet and Healthy Rosh HaShana.

Richard "Dick" Lobenthal z"l (age 83), community pillar who fought hatred through his years of work at the ADL, passed away this week. May his family and friends gain comfort from his spirit and memories as he was truly a blessing unto his family and community.

He started as a cartoonist, he borrowed $8,000 from his mom to start his famous magazine career, he holds the record for owning the largest collection of personal scrapbooks and he will soon be buried next to Marilyn Monroe.  Condolences to the friends and family of Hugh Hefner who died this week at the age 91

Condolences to Rick and Kim Chesbrough and their family on the passing of Rick's father, Richard "Dick" Chesbrough age 87.  He and his late wife, Joyce, raised a beautiful family of four children and 10 grandchildren who, with many friends, will greatly miss his presence as he was a blessing unto his family and community.
