Manny Drukier narrowly escaped the war by jumping from a "death train" at age 16, finding refuge at a home for orphans and displaced children. Seventy-one years later, Manny, who lived in Toronto, was tracked down by a German researcher who had been searching for the surviving children for the past decade. She invited Manny to return to the former orphanage to share his story with the next generation of school students. Manny must now revisit the places of his darkest memories, to reconcile the past and educate the future. A Q & A will follow after each screening.

In the spring of 1965 Germany and Israel reluctantly entered into diplomatic relations. What at first glance seems to be a rather unlikely relationship — especially in light of the shared history — has evolved over time into a blossoming friendship and successful economic bond. Join the JCC’s new Arts and Culture Director Anette Isaacs as she discusses how her native country has attempted to cope with the guilt of causing the Holocaust and how this painful but necessary process heralded a new era in German-Israeli relations.

A story unlike any other! Meet the cave explorer Chris Nicola who uncovered evidence that a group of Jewish families had lived in a Ukrainian cave for 511 days. Also meet Erin Halpern who went back to the cave to say thank you for her family's survival. The filmmaker Janet Tobias chronicled this amazing tale in her powerful film, No Place on Earth.

HEROES OF THE ST. LOUIS

Many people are familiar with the tragic story of the St. Louis ship, whose nearly 1000 Jewish passengers were turned back to Europe in 1939. But few are aware of the bravery of the ship’s captain, Gustav Schroeder, who was declared a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem, and of Morris Troper and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Learn about their tireless efforts to rescue the passengers.

Light work needed due to member's physical limitations. No personal care required. Live-in member's home, own room, cable TV, internet, full bath, gated safe community in Boynton Beach.
