After a long winter, spring is finally here! This is the time for personal change and renewal. A time where we start to declutter our lives or even our home with spring cleaning. This season brings extended daylight where we can take off our coats and enjoy the weather. Did you know? The word equinox comes from the Latin word meaning “equal night”, the name explains the time of the year when the day and night are of equal length. After being indoors for most of the winter, enjoy this season to be out with your families, enjoy seeing the rebirth of the flowers and trees. Wishing you all a happy spring season.

Skills for Youth Success (SYS)

In partnership with United Way of Greater Toronto, Skills for Youth Success (SYS) is an innovative pre-employment program designed to teach youth ages 15-29 how to market themselves in today’s digital world. Through step-by-step instruction, youth in this program learn how to build professional digital profiles, create new-media based resumes, develop networking skills and explore careers through our career networking events. Active and Connected Seniors

CultureLink- in partnership with United Way of Greater Toronto- has begun the Active and Connected Seniors Program that aims to maintain an inclusive and safe space where low-income, newcomer and racialized persons 55 years of age or older living in South-Parkdale find a home away from home. Every Monday and Wednesday, an average of 40 seniors from different nationalities meet to spend the afternoon together and to participate in a number of activities designed to promote physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social, and intellectual wellness.

More Life (Skills) Workshop Series:

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Toronto Youth Equity Strategy (TYES) to deliver a series of crime prevention workshops for youth aged 12 to 17 living in the west-end of the City.

Using hip hop and popular culture, More Life (Skills) is series of 8 workshops developed to support youth to learn about identity, conflict resolution, stress management, transferable skills, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, goal setting and online safety. Read More

SWIS visiting the Children and Youth Centre

In collaboration with the team of the Children and Youth Centre, Western Technical supportive VP Lindsay, and the ESL skillful and seasoned teacher Pamela Evans, Grade 10 & 11 Students had a trip to our Children & Youth Centre on April 12 ^th. Students were introduced to the youth Centre, and a presentation was delivered on the services provided by CultureLink and the opportunities youth have to develop their skills and knowledge.

In addition, students spent quality time on leadership activities which themselves found very helpful and skillful. One of the activities was presenting and marketing different items, where students collaborated to write a commercial describing the items, working their way through to find suitable vocabulary that would best describe the item and trying to think outside the box. Another activity, students used marshmallows & spaghetti to make 3D shapes, that was a blast for everyone among the 3 teams, and prizes were given to the best leaders among the groups.

Developing leaderships skills - leadership session with Syrian women

A group of Syrian Refugee women attended a workshop on Leadership on May 23rd/2018 at CultureLink.

One of the activities was to talk about the people that they left an impact on their lives, and all the stories were about people they knew and had personal relationships with them. And they found out that the leaders are the people who have the ability to build a good relationship with others. They shared their refugee experience in a new country, participants appreciated the freedom of expressing their stories.
