These twilight weeks of 2022 offer a time of reflection – both on the past 12 months and the New Year ahead.

Macon Volunteer Clinic celebrates the accomplishments of 2022, all made possible through altruism. With volunteers returning to pre-pandemic levels, we fulfilled almost 7,000 patient encounters through November this year and welcomed 184 new patients! New volunteers joined our journey, representing endocrinology, neurology, acupuncture, dentistry and more. 

Here are just a few of our 2022 milestones:

• Our board voted in January to welcome eligible Twiggs County residents to receive MVC care!
•  We completed a 10-day nutrition demonstration project with Rescue Mission residents, where ‘before’ and ‘after’ biometrics demonstrated the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet.
• We began offering a twice-monthly, on-site clinic at the Rescue Mission for its residents.
• Five new community-minded individuals joined our MVC board.
• Atrium Rehabilitation Hospital began offering pro bono physical therapy services to referred MVC patients.
• Piedmont Macon donated 1,000 COVID-19 test kits for our patients and volunteers.
• Piedmont Macon also committed to giving MVC patients $200,000 in pro bono radiology services a year for the next two years.
• Mercer School of Medicine placed an LMFT intern at MVC for the fall semester, giving our patients access to free mental health counseling.
• The brand new ‘Fly Infestation’ music fest – in honor of the beloved late J-Fly who had no health insurance – benefited MVC with a monetary gift, and a ‘friends-raiser’ at the Society Garden.
• With the first installment of a 3-year, $75,000 gift from MetroPower, we began enhancements of a women’s health exam room through a new power exam table, a new microscope, and ceiling hung privacy curtains.

You and I are fortunate to have health insurance that shields us from unexpected expenses. Our insurance protects the money we save for the future. It gives us peace of mind. It helps preserve our physical and emotional health.

Being a low-income, working, uninsured American means you pay out of pocket for any medical services, however necessary or life-saving they might be. These individuals are much less likely to seek the medical care they need. They are less likely to receive preventive care and manage chronic diseases.

During this season of light and joy, you can be the miracle of life and health. A gift of $129 provides a medical visit. A gift of $1,513 provides a full year of primary care for a patient. 

The gift of health is priceless. Your generosity advances our vital mission into 2023, when we will commemorate 20 years of service through philanthropy and voluntarism. Together, we will ensure ours is a community where all have healthcare access, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Macon Volunteer Clinic recently unveiled its new Women's Health exam room funded by the first installment of a three-year grant from MetroPower. A new power exam table, ceiling hung privacy curtains, and microscope were purchased. MVC presented MetroPower representatives Danny Gibson and Deanna Jones with a Mayoral Proclamation proclaiming November 29, 2022 as MetroPower Day! With this grant, we will continue to provide our female patients with the privacy and up to date services they deserve and continue our mission to offer free primary healthcare for uninsured working adults in Bibb and Twiggs counties who, with limited income, would otherwise go without care. Thank you MetroPower for your continued support of our mission!



Macon Volunteer Clinic is the grateful recipient of an agreement with Piedmont Macon for $200,000 in pro bono patient radiology services per year for the next two years. We are overwhelmed by their generosity. Piedmont’s pro bono radiology services help advance primary healthcare for hundreds of patients annually, strengthening families, our workforce, and our community as a whole. We are passionate about our mission of caring for the uninsured, financially challenged workers of Bibb and Twiggs counties, helping them manage and maintain their health while avoiding emergency rooms which are better utilized for true emergencies. These pro bono services will go towards basic diagnostic x-rays and ultrasounds.

On Saturday, November 19, Macon Volunteer Clinic hosted a student-run clinic with 2nd year medical students from Mercer University School of Medicine.

Under the supervision of Dr. Allen Tindol and Dr. Carl Lane, the students provided care to several MVC patients. This continued partnership with Mercer allows medical students to interact with patients and it offers an additional appointment day for those we serve.



Volunteer Grant Cookson was recently accepted into Mercer School of Medicine.

Volunteer Dinali Patel is currently in her first year at The Dental College of Georgia.

Volunteer Dipesh Patel was recently accepted into the Boston University Dental School.

Dr. Gazelle Moharari has volunteered with Macon Volunteer Clinic since September of 2021. Dr. Moharari is a native of Georgia, growing up in Chamblee and Marietta, and attended the University of West Georgia and Medical College of Georgia for her B.S. and M.D. respectively. She left Georgia to complete her residency in Florence, SC, then returned to Marietta to work in private practice. Dr. Moharari also volunteered at Clarkston Community Health Center, a free/charitable health clinic for the uninsured and underserved residents of Clarkston and surrounding communities. She moved to Macon in 2021 after her marriage, volunteers with Macon Volunteer Clinic, and works for Amwell Urgent Care (telehealth). She believes that "healthcare is a human right" and is grateful to be able to serve with MVC to provide primary care for uninsured patients. Thank you Dr. Moharari for giving your time and skills to our patients. We are so grateful for your heart of service.
