As we approach the Thanksgiving season, I find myself reflecting deeply on the meaning of gratitude—not only in my personal life but also in the incredible work we do together each day across the Youngstown City School District.
Thanksgiving is more than a holiday on the calendar. It is a time to pause, look around, and recognize the people and moments that give our days purpose. For me, that gratitude begins with our scholars—the heartbeat of this district. Every smile, every breakthrough, every step forward they take reminds me why we do this work. Watching our young people grow into confident, capable "Defenders" of their own future fills me with pride and hope.
I am also profoundly thankful for our staff. From teachers and paraprofessionals to custodians, food service workers, and office teams, they each carry the mission of "One Vision, One Youngstown."
In a time when education faces so many challenges, their commitment and compassion remind us that schools are about people first.
To our building leaders, department heads, and central office team, they continue to push forward with excellence and help shape the culture and climate of YCSD in powerful ways.
I am grateful as well for our families and community partners—those who believe in us, collaborate with us, and help us create opportunities for our scholars. Youngstown is a city of resilience and generosity. We have a spirit here that refuses to quit, and together we are proving that our best days are ahead.
On a personal level, I am thankful for my family: my wife, my children, my mother, and all of my cousins, aunties, and uncles (official and unofficial :)) and all those who remind me daily what love, patience, and faith truly look like. Their support allows me to serve this community with purpose and passion.
As we gather around tables this Thanksgiving, we each take a moment to count our blessings and to look beyond what's difficult and see what's possible.
In Youngstown City School District, we are not just building schools—we are creating futures. And for that, I am truly thankful.
From my family to yours, I wish each of you a safe, restful, and joy-filled Thanksgiving holiday.
With gratitude,
Jeremy J. Batchelor, Superintendent
Youngstown City School District
“One Vision. One Youngstown.”
