My attention like yours, is given to a wide variety of things in any given week, this week they came together in an interesting way.
I have been watching the Crown on Netflix, a drama about the early reign of the current Queen of England. I have been listening to some of the impeachment hearings. I am preparing for my extended family to arrive for Thanksgiving next week. And I have been praying with the scripture for the coming Sunday which retells the crucifixion of Jesus. An interesting mix.
Jesus on the cross has power to reinterpret all of my attentions. His life alters my perspective on the news, my domestic concerns, my work for the church, even what I do for entertainment in a new way if I give him the power. His suffering revealed an eternal hidden power of God at work beyond all the headlines and personal concerns of every generation.
What has been the mix of things that had your attention this week?
How does inviting Jesus into all these concerns and interests change how you view them?
This weekend I gather with delegates and priests from across the Diocese of Chicago for our annual convention. We will vote on issues related to our church and to current social injustices. This reminds me that true religion is not another thing among many we give our attention to, true religion is giving God power in our lives to change them.
At the convention will also celebrate the faith of Jesus who taught us to trust God’s attention is eternally with God’s whole creation. Who revealed the hidden power of God’s love for the flourishing of human kind. And to believe the power of God’s mercy has overcome death and all evil.
With You on the Journey,
