Spooky Sustainability Trunk

Thanks to Brad Karalius's family who made the end of fossil fuels a theme at this year's Pine Hill Trunk and Treat Show. Brad and his wife Christine are among the growing number of Pine Hill parents upgrading their homes to higher energy standards while saving big on heating fuels and electricity. A combination of spray foam insulation in the attic, solar panels, and ducted air-source heat pumps helped them reduce their energy cost from over $11,000 to about $1,600 per year.

I spoke to another family who has made similar strides in combining solar with air-source heat pumps and confirmed substantial savings:" I am making an 18% return on investment, that's better than what you get on the stock market on a good day. In my mind, everybody should do it", confided one dad who works as a builder and sees clearly the advantages of these systems on a daily basis.

During times of skyrocketing energy prices, savvy Sherborn residents are going all in for fully electrifying their homes

Yatish and Patricia P. of 5 Towne Lyne Rd started looking for alternatives to oil heat. After careful research and looking at several systems, they decided to consider going for green energy and decided to go for geothermal and solar options. Soaring gas, oil, and electricity rates caused homeowners to evaluate the cost of renewable energy systems formerly considered out of reach. On top of that, the recent Inflation Reduction Act reinstated the 30% federal tax credit available to homeowners which considerably reduces the upfront investment. An additional cut in cost comes from the Mass Save program that provided a $15,000 rebate on the geothermal system. Ground source/geothermal heat pumps extract heat from the ground during cold weather and distribute it throughout your home. During warmer months, this process is reversed to provide cooling. Instead of burning fossil fuels, they’re powered by electricity to move—rather than create—heat and cold to keep your home at a comfortable temperature year-round. This system is the most efficient type of heat pump and can be a great option for properties with sufficient outdoor space. If you consider a system like this or an alternative air-source heat pump, we can connect you to homeowners and installers in the area.
