Thriving, Not Just Surviving, with Asthma
|
Asthma doesn’t have to hold you back.
With proper management, education, and support, you can achieve your dreams while living a healthier, more fulfilling life. Sharing my story has been my way of showing that thriving with asthma is possible.
| | |
Describe your asthma journey. What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them? | Living with asthma since childhood, I’ve faced frequent hospitalizations (I used to visit the ER every night of October and April for the first 10 years of my life) and challenges navigating triggers like allergens and weather changes. By becoming an expert in my own health and advocating for myself, I’ve developed strategies to avoid triggers, manage stress, and adhere to personalized treatment plans.
Do you have a success story or milestone that you are particularly proud of?
Writing my book, Mommy I Can’t Breathe: The Modern Guide to Navigate Allergies and Asthma, is a milestone I’m deeply proud of. It's allowed me to share my knowledge, helping countless families better manage asthma and allergies while advocating for themselves in healthcare settings. Also the day my Allergist said you don't have to take daily medications anymore it was about 2018.
Have you helped or supported someone else with asthma?
Yes, I’ve mentored families navigating asthma, teaching them to recognize triggers, properly use inhalers, and communicate effectively with doctors. Knowing I’ve helped reduce ER visits and improved their quality of life is one of my greatest rewards.
What motivates you to stay positive and proactive in managing your or your loved ones' asthma?
The desire to live a full life without limitations and inspire others motivates me. Each success story reminds me that proper management can lead to thriving, not just surviving, with asthma.
Who or what has been your biggest source of support and inspiration in your or your loved ones' asthma journey?
My parents were my earliest supporters, ensuring I had the care I needed. My mom was a Respiratory Therapist, so I was Blessed from birth!! She taught me everything I knew about asthma as a child. Today, my audience inspires me to keep pushing forward—they remind me of the power of shared experiences and education.
Do you have any advice for others living with asthma or for those supporting someone with asthma?
Educate yourself and advocate for your needs. Build a strong care team, stay on top of your treatment plan, and never hesitate to ask questions. Supporters can provide encouragement, empathy, and help by ensuring environments are asthma-friendly.
