The "Lunch Lady" Transforms School Lunch Program
Two weeks ago, I was in Southern California to attend Expo West. While there, I made a visit to Topanga to see my friend Hilary Boynton , who I have known for over 10 years. Hilary is the author of Heal Your Gut Cookbook . This “Lunch Lady” has helped transform the lunch program of Manzanita School , an independent school focused on 4th to 12th graders located in Topanga Canyon, CA.

I joined Hilary and the kitchen staff to cook fresh and traditional Indian food for over 70 kids and school staff using Ghee , Turmeric Superghee , and spices from Pure Indian Foods. At one point, we weren’t sure if we would be ready by the lunch break, but with some amazing teamwork, we were able to serve Chana Masala , Aloo Gobi , Green Garlic Soup , Coconut Rice, Spinach Salad, with homemade kraut and preserved lemons. Everyone loved the food and many came back for seconds. Hilary wants to transform the lunch program of schools all across America, and bring real food to the schools. We wish her good luck!
How Ayurvedic Doshas Affect YOU
"Have you ever wondered why some people run warm and some run cold? Or why one person loves spicy food and another one can’t stand hot spices? Or why some people are always mellow and calm and others are prone to nervousness and stress?

The Ayurvedic answer is easy--it’s because we are each a unique balance of the three doshas or mind-body types. Ayurveda is the ancient healing system of India, and rather than being one-size-fits-all, it is highly individualized. Since no two people are exactly alike, it follows that no two people should eat exactly alike. By teaching us to better understand ourselves and our true nature, Ayurveda gives us the tools to live in greater health and harmony." - Greta Kent-Stoll, CAS

Black salt is incredibly popular in Asia and is gaining popularity here in the Western world. It has a unique sulfuric flavor, which can be used to add the qualities of  umami  to culinary creations. Grind fresh into omelets to make them taste richer, or sprinkle on fresh fruit, in salads, or to curries and chutneys.

Refreshing water infused with star anise!
Did you know that most of the  Star Anise  produced in the world are used to make a leading brand of flu medicine?  Star Anise  is so pretty, but very few people know how to this spice at home. For centuries, people have been using star anise to make infused drinking water or infusing star anise with other spices into their broths and stocks. To infuse your water, simply drop one star anise in a water jug, and next day the water will be incredibly fragrant!
