In life, our plans and hobbies get pushed around. So does all of our good intentions when it comes to getting ready for a hunt. We are a custom to our own back yards when it comes to hunting, but as we get older we long for that adventure on some far away mountain in a place that is as new to us as it is exciting. But!
Seldom do we get to train in scenarios that mimic all that mother nature throws at us and our equipment. Are you prepared? That is a question that we will be asked and one that can truly only be answered when the real situation presents itself. It's these types of situations and the solving of the problems that have been presented that really make the best stories. Sadly though, too many times it costs you your comfort, your health and sometimes even your life.
I have spent time with many guides and the stories they tell keep me mesmerized like a young boy setting around a campfire hearing stories on his first woodland adventure. These stories can range from fun and funny to adrenaline rushing bear charges to life and death situations where near death experiences come to close to us the living.
The questions then is, how do you possibly train as if it was a real world test. The answer is you can't, at least not by yourself. You can get your equipment ready, your health up to speed and airplane tickets purchased. But into the wild you go, ready or not.
This is something I have been wanting to do for a while. I have been choosing between competitive shooting (which I have had a successful run at) or follow my passion for the outdoors and sharing it. With the help of a good friend and guide, we are going to launch a Preparing For the Hunt Class. A 201 and 301 event. The 201 will be a multi day adventure in the back woods and mountains of West Virginia, putting both you and your equipment to the test both in the field and in real hunting world scenario.
Level 301 will be you exiting your vehicle Friday afternoon with all of your equipment and not returning until Sunday evening. You will be brining your tent, water, food and all of you gear for a real world test of both you, your equipment and your shooting abilities. There will be two spike camps along the route and along with some of the most beautiful scenery the wilds of West Virginia have to offer. And let's not forget we will be engaging and shooting targets all along the way.
More information will be coming soon!
