The O'Reilly Minute
Dear Parents,

I hope you read the email sent by Monsignor Hendricks earlier this morning. We are very excited to announce that the tuition rate will be frozen for the 2020-2021 school year. We are also very excited about a new program we've been working on for your family. Please join Monsignor Hendricks and me on Thursday, January 16 at 7 PM for a mandatory parent meeting where we will be announcing this new program and discuss the state of our Catholic school. Click here to RSVP if you have not yet.

Please make sure you read the SPICE Skillbuilding Scoop in this issue. Megan and Amanda, our school occupational therapists, share information about the importance of play and mental health. Mental health issues are on the rise nationally and in our school. This article is full of easy ideas to help make positive changes in your child’s daily life.

As Christmas break is fast approaching I have several updates for the remainder of this week:
  • Lunch Menu reminders:
  • Thursday - Sack lunch only due to CARE Family lunch meeting - Turkey sandwich, chips, apple slices, carrots and an oreo cookie.

SPiCE Skillbuilding Scoop: What Has Happened to Play?
By Megan Bouscher, Occupational Therapist and Amanda Ghiloni, Occupational Therapist

Play has changed significantly over the last several years. Remember when you were young? If your mothers were anything like ours, she probably stood in your backyard and yelled down the neighborhood calling you inside for dinner and then would do it again in 3 hours for bed! As children, we were NEVER inside. So what has changed? How is it affecting our children, and how can we as parents support our children better?

What Has Changed?
In the past fifteen years, educators and professionals have made significant strides in the identification, diagnosis and treatment of children who are different learners. However, more children are being diagnosed in schools with not only learning issues but attention and emotional issues that are impacting success in the classroom.

Mental Statistics from 2017
  • 1 in 5 children has mental health problems
  • 43% increase in ADHD
  • 37% increase in teen depression\
  • 100% increase in suicide rate in kids 10-14 years old
