The O'Reilly Minute
Dear Parents,

This week we celebrate the 2nd week of Advent! Please see the story below with Advent resources for your family. Additionally, each morning during our 8:10 am prayers and announcements I read the Advent Action from the booklet, “A New Light Shines." Each of our families received this booklet two weeks ago. I hope you are finding many practical suggestions for bringing alive the spirit of Advent as a family.

Remember that tomorrow is our “Twas the Night Before Christmas” event. Our students and staff are invited to wear school appropriate pajamas to school tomorrow for a Christmas movie and a popcorn treat!

Please start thinking ahead to your January calendar and consider attending the Zoom parenting workshop series called Surviving in Trying Times. (see more details below) The presenter, Sarah Buffie worked with our staff in August on the topic of Trauma-Informed Care to help prepare us for our work with our children this school year. Sarah’s presentation was one of the best I have ever attended, so I feel very strongly that this would be time well spent.

I hope you were able to watch the State of the School videos from Monsignor Hendricks and myself last week, and to learn about our scholarship award recipients. We have one additional scholarship recipient to announce, as the Karen and William Nomina Faith and Service Scholarship donors decided to award an additional scholarship. Congratulations to the Heise family for receiving this award!

A Task Force Update will be coming out in the next few days on the topic of the new CDC quarantine policies and information about travel quarantines.

Advent Blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

Parenting Workshop: Surviving in Trying Times
Crucial Conversations will be hosting an upcoming Zoom parenting workshop series called Surviving in Trying Times.

Anyone else feel like they are in survival mode these days? Do you ever have full, happy days where you forget the chaos of the outside (or inside) world? Either way, we are all in the thick of it and one thing that makes it tougher is trying to do it all alone. So, let’s not try to do it alone. In this series we will be inviting families to come together in a supportive learning environment in order to engage with one another and with practices that help us not just survive in trying times, but thrive. We all have the capacity to cultivate safer relationships with ourselves and others. The key is practice. And practicing within the context of community makes it that much sweeter.

Please join us via this Zoom link on the following dates:
  • Thursday, January 7, 7-8:30 PM
  • Thursday, January 14, 7-8:30 PM
  • Thursday, January 28, 7-8:30 PM

Sarah Buffie, Founding Director and Trauma Responsive Care Trainer of Soul Bird Consulting will be providing a series of parenting workshops via Zoom for our St. Brigid of Kildare community. Sarah recently worked with our St. Brigid of Kildare School teachers and staff to learn about trauma-informed care and how to apply empathy as it relates to our students' lives and learning. Sarah's trainings disrupt current models of thinking by building empathy and understanding around the effects of trauma and systems of oppression.

These workshops will include small group discussion and will build on each other (so it's beneficial to attend them all, but not required).

Dress Code Do's and Don'ts
Catholic schools have traditionally implemented dress codes. Our school dress code is important for some very significant reasons. First, it reminds our students daily that their importance is not based on their outward appearance, but rather on their inner being. We are all made in the image and likeness of God, and exterior appearances are not the basis of our individual value. Also, a common uniform allows students to focus on academics and friendships, rather than on competition or current styles. When bringing their children to our school, parents agree to comply with the dress code and purchase clothing items accordingly.

Please click the image to the right for dress code "do's and don'ts," and please ensure that your students are dressed according to the school dress code as soon as possible. We have added an example related to PE uniform socks.

As clothing trends continue to evolve, we will continue to provide clarifications and updates to help you sort through what is and is not dress code.

Thank you for your cooperation!
Cards for Parishioner's 80th Birthday
A few weeks ago, the parish office learned that longtime and founding parishioner Dave Francis would soon be turning 80 years old. Since his family was not able to have a big party for him due to COVID-19, they celebrated via mail-in birthday cards! Since his church family has meant a lot to him, many members of the parish sent in handwritten cards. In addition, all the students in the school created hand-drawn cards for him as well!

Dave celebrated his birthday this weekend, and we received a call from both Dave and his wife to thank us for our kindness.

The children enjoyed spreading joy and kindness to one of our senior members of the parish whose birthday is on the Feast of St. Nicholas.
Morning Car Rider Drop Off Update
Please note that our morning schedule will change slightly on mornings when the actual temperature or wind chill temperature is 15 degrees or lower. On these mornings, car rider drop off will start at 7:40. Our teachers stand out in the cold for 30-40 minutes on most mornings, but that is not physically safe for them on frigid mornings. Please remember that no child should ever exit a car until our morning crew comes outside. Thanks for your help and care for our teachers.

Also, please remember we will switch the order of car rider dismissal when we reach the halfway point in the school year. Starting Tuesday, January19, 2021, we will dismiss the L-Z car riders at 2:52 and the A-K car riders will be dismissed at 3:05.

Christmas Mass Reservations Required
Reservations will be required to attend a Mass on Christmas Eve (6:30 PM and 9:00 PM), Christmas Day (9 AM and 11 AM), and January 1 - Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (11 AM). To accommodate as many as possible, we will also be livestreaming some of these Masses in Hendricks Hall and in the Robert D. Walter Family Gymnasium. These locations also require reservations.

Mass reservations can be made on our website until Friday, December 18 at noon. To make a reservation, visit www.stbrigidofkildare.org and click the “Advent & Christmas” link in the top black bar. You will be able to select the location (church, Hendricks Hall or gymnasium) for each Mass. Once the capacity for each location is full, that option will be closed out.

All Masses will be livestreamed at youtube.com/stbrigidofkildarechurch, including the Christmas Eve 4 PM livestream-only Mass. Please consider this option for celebrating the Nativity of the Lord safely at home. We will also be holding Masses every day during the Octave of Christmas, Dec 26 - Dec 31. Please also consider attending one of these Masses instead of a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Mass.
