WOLFHOUND WEDNESDAY
March 2, 2022
Kindergartners worked on an Almsgiving poster before Lent
The O'Reilly Minute
Dear Parents,

Today is Ash Wednesday, which begins our season of Lent. As a school community, we were able to join together today at 9:00 AM for Mass and receive ashes marked in a sign of the cross as a reminder that we are entering into a time of preparation for Easter. It is a time of transformation as we focus our lives and spirits toward God. During Lent, we prepare ourselves for the great feast of Easter through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

As a family it is important to engage our children in conversations about the rites and rituals of Lent. It is also a time to demonstrate how the Lenten season can help families focus on spiritual growth together. Often we focus on what to "give up" for Lent, which is a great practice to teach the habit of sacrifice, but also think about what spiritual goals you can set as a family during this time. It can be something simple like praying together on the way to school or cleaning out your closets and donating all of the things you don't need to charity or participating in our food drive for “Feed The Kids Columbus”. Another family goal this Lent could be having a simple meal at home once a week instead of going out to eat and putting the money that was saved in the Catholic Relief Services rice bowls. We will be sending home rice bowls on Friday if you would like to use them as a family this Lent.

May these 40 days of Lent be a journey for you and your family to grow closer to Christ.

Lenten blessings,
Kathy O’Reilly

P.S. Reminder that there will not be a school Mass on Thursday, March 3rd.

Also, there is a lunch menu change for this Friday -- we will now have cheese quesadillas instead of Bosco sticks. The rest of the menu stays the same.

Our School Annual Fund Update
The St. Brigid of Kildare Annual Fund is the way our Home and School Committee is able to provide all the extras that make the St. Brigid experience special for our children, teachers and staff. The Valentine's Day parties and field trips like Biz Town are just a few of the fun projects the Annual Fund pays for during the school year.

This school year, we have raised $40,660 from 229 families! Our goal is $45,000 which is what the Home & School committee needs to fund their activities.

We are so close -- if you have not donated, please consider giving to the Annual Fund so we can continue to provide the best experience for your children. Thank you to everyone that has supported this important program!
Security Hounds: Self-Defense Lesson
Mr. McKenna, coordinator of campus safety and security, is finishing self-defense lessons with the 8th graders this week. They have been doing fantastic. They will have the opportunity, if they wish, to practice what they've learned at the end of this week!

Lessons have focused on the following:
  • Intuition - Trust Your Instincts - Avoid Physical Confrontation.
  • Principles of Belief - You Can Do It!
  • Not Focusing on Purely Physical Strength - Fight Smarter; not Harder
  • Fall Principles
  • Verbal Stun
  • Low-Level Distance Clearing
  • Striking Techniques
  • Escape from Front and Rear Chokes
  • Introduction to Ground Defense

Mr. McKenna teaches that the first and most important lesson on self-defense is to avoid the physical confrontation.

A reminder that we will be having our school safety drill on March 3, 2022.

As always feel free to contact Mr. McKenna with any questions.

NCEA Article: Ash Wednesday
Shine the Light

Forty-three days before Easter, Catholics across the world can be identified by a dark cross of ashes on their foreheads. The ashes on our foreheads remind us we are called to repent for our sins. Ash Wednesday also marks the start of a hopeful journey, Lent, in which we rediscover the light of Christ in our lives.
