The O'Reilly Minute

Dear Parents,

This past Sunday we began a new liturgical year with the beginning of Advent. These four weeks are a special time of prayer and preparation. Advent is a time to prepare our hearts and souls to celebrate the birthday of the Messiah.  One way to spend time in prayer and preparation as a family is to light a family Advent wreath each evening before dinner.  As a school family we start each school day by praying and lighting a candle on the school Advent wreath.

Our Home and School has been busy planning several fun activities for our students and staff during the month of December.  Our volunteer parents will help us to celebrate this coming Tuesday the Feast of St. Nicholas.  This December 6th feast day provides a teachable moment to share the story of St. Nicholas, who is known for generosity and secretly gifting those in need. We will be on the lookout to see if St. Nicholas will stop by our school on his horse and (with the assistance of our Home and School) deliver candy canes for all of our students!

In this same spirit of generosity, our Home and School Outreach Committee is working with our 8th grade Service Committee led by 8th grade members Luke Bennison and Michael Baumel to sponsor a Stuff the Stocking Project to benefit Ronald McDonald House.  In the story below you can learn more about how you can help support this Advent project.

During Advent our parish and school are offering many additional opportunities for prayer, reflection and joy!  The complete listing of parish offerings is available at this link:  https://stbrigidofkildare.org/advent-christmas/

I would like to highlight the Taize Prayer Service this week on December 1st at 6:30 pm in the church.  This is a special opportunity to spend some quiet time in prayer and reflection as a family.

Planning ahead to Tuesday, December 13th, our 5 - 8 grade choir students will be presenting to school families a Christmas Choir Concert at 7:00 pm in the church. I am looking forward to a 2nd beautiful evening of prayer and music during this busy month of December.

This week our 2nd graders will be celebrating a very special event in the development of their faith life.  On December 3rd our second grade students, with the support of their parents, will be making their first Reconciliation. Please keep our 2nd grade children in your prayers.

Planning ahead to Tuesday, December 13th, our 5 - 8 grade choir students will be presenting for school families a Christmas Choir Concert at 7:00 pm in the church. I am looking forward to a beautiful evening of prayer and music.

In closing, I have some additional good news to share with you.  Yesterday, the state of Ohio announced this year’s School Security Grant recipients.  I am excited to announce that we have been selected to receive a $100,000 grant to enhance the safety and security of our facility.  A special thank you to Bruce McKenna for spearheading the grant writing process for our school.  Please read the details in the story below.

Advent Blessings,

Kathy O'Reilly

St. Brigid School Receives $100,000 Safety Grant

On November 28, 2022, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that Saint Brigid of Kildare School has been awarded a $100,000 grant to pay for security upgrades that enhance the safety of students and staff. The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, in coordination with the Ohio School Safety Center and the Ohio Office of Budget and Management, created a competitive grant opportunity for up to $100,000 per school to improve overall building safety and security. Governor Dewine announced that 708 schools in 57 counties will receive grants under this program.

The grants are part of his $100 million Ohio K-12 School Safety Grant Program.  Funds will be used to cover expenses associated with physical security enhancements such as security cameras, public address systems, automatic door locks, visitor badging systems, and exterior lighting.

OFCC received complete applications from more than 2,000 schools, and the grants were awarded through a competitive process. To learn more about the grant and to view the list of awarded schools, visit https://ofcc.ohio.gov/Services-Programs/Grants/Ohios-K-12-School-Safety-Grant-Program.

Stuff the Stocking Project

Parents, as you may know, Christmas is steadily approaching. The 8th grade service committee has a fun project for the kids to do. We are working to help the families at the Ronald McDonald house, in order for them to have a more delightful Christmas. The kindergarten through 8th grade will buddy up on Saint Nicholas Day to craft stockings filled with treats and toys for the families! The toys will go to kids of all ages. We are asking for donations of goodies to put in the stockings. Here is a link to the Amazon Wish List (please have items shipped to your home and then your student can bring the items to school) ***Deadline to send in donations is Dec 20th.

God bless you all, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund: Donate by Dec 31

This weekend at Mass, we spoke about a new state program that allows donors to receive a tax credit on their Ohio tax return up to $750 ($1,500 if married and filing jointly).

In 2021 the State of Ohio created a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO) Program. This program allows Ohio taxpayers to donate to a K-12 SGO for that school to use for scholarships for tuition based on financial need. The donor then receives a dollar-for-dollar non-refundable tax credit on their Ohio state tax return up to $750 ($1,500 if married and filing jointly). This is in addition to a federal tax deduction you are always able to take.

The Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund (under the Diocesan Education Corporation) is certified as an SGO by the Ohio Attorney General. This fund solely benefits students in the Diocese of Columbus Catholic Schools.

Parishioners, family, and friends of St. Brigid of Kildare can donate and directly designate St. Brigid of Kildare School as the recipient of their donation. If you choose not to designate a school, the money will be used in a general fund for financial aid for diocesan students based on need.

All donations will be managed through the Emmaus Road Scholarship Fund.

100% of those funds will be available to our school the following tax year to be used for scholarships for our students.

To donate online, click the Donate link below (type St. Brigid of Kildare School in the text box if you would like your donation to go to St. Brigid School).

Annual Fund Supports After School Learning Programs

The Annual Fund supports the After School Learning & Service Opportunities (ALSO) Program.

Each year students in 5-8 grade have the opportunity to join one of these programs. They have a wide range of interests and subjects so there is something for every student. A few are Yearbook, Bell Choir, Chess Club, Puzzles and Games, Wolfhound Innovation Team, Wolfhound Running Club, Power of the Pen and Pencil. These programs allow students to explore their talents outside of class and offer an opportunity for socialization and personal growth.

Our Wolfhound Innovation Team with Mrs. Kerinan Jordan is learning how to troubleshoot Chrome devices, learn basic repairs for chrome devices, and plan Innovation Stations where our fellow Wolfhounds can dive deeper into content knowledge. Additionally, they will work together to create tech support materials for students and teachers in our building.

The team has programmed our Sphero Robots to travel in a perfect square or jump a ramp and has worked with drones. Students also have the opportunity to create resources for students and teachers to use in the classroom on our new Viewsonic Interactive Whiteboards. This year we have 12 students on the innovation team in grades 6, 7, 8.

Please consider supporting the Annual Fund so St. Brigid of Kildare can continue to offer these opportunities to our students.
