Dear Parents,

Over the last two weeks, students in Grades 4-8 took the Clifton Youth Strengths Explorer.  This online assessment asked students to think about how they felt about different situations and to rate each one using a scale.  The results yielded three areas of strengths/talents for each child.

Please take a few minutes to watch this video.  It provides a brief summary of why one mom chose to use the Strengths Explorer with her children and how it has helped her foster their strengths/talents.

At school next week, your child will have the opportunity to see and read about his/her top three strengths, taking time to read the talent report that is created after the assessment was completed.  On Friday, October 12th,  you will be given directions, along with a code, so that you may access and take time to review the talent report as well.

Please see this link for a brief summary of the 12 theme descriptions. You will see your child's top three themes described in the report that you can access October 12.

We will be completing activities at school to foster these strengths/talents, and we will also give students in all grade levels activities that we ask families to participate in at home.

Blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

Terra Nova Test Prep

During the week of October 15th, 2018, 3rd - 8th grade students will be taking the Terra Nova test, a standardized test adopted by the Diocese of Columbus.  The Diocese mandates testing in grades three through eight. Testing will occur on each day of the week, Monday-Friday.

As in the past, we ask that parents do a couple of things to help their child do his/her best.
  • Don't plan any appointments that would cause your child to miss a portion of a test.
  • Make sure that your child is in bed at a time to ensure that he/she has sufficient sleep to function well.
  • Have your child eat a good breakfast before coming to school.

Terra Nova testing is important for a variety of reasons.  First, our school uses these results to help us target areas in which we can improve as a school.  Additionally, teachers use the results to see how to best meet the needs of the students in their classrooms.  For eighth graders, the Terra Nova results have a critical impact as the high schools use these results to help make placement decisions about incoming freshmen.

It is important that your child realizes that he/she is not expected to know all of the answers since this is not a test for which a student can prepare.  You can help to prevent anxiety if you take time to discuss this with your child. Although the results are important, please remember that this is only one indicator of how your child is doing academically.  The day-to-day assessments that your child's teacher gives are a better indicator of how well your child is mastering the diocesan curricula.

Meals  on  Wheels  Delivery Opportunity
Informational Meeting October 11

There is a strong need to provide and deliver meals for the elderly in Columbus. You and your family have the chance to partner with LifeCare Alliance's Meals on Wheels program to help keep our aging neighbors in their homes, where they want to be. Our children will see the good they are doing in their community by handing over a hot meal to someone in need, while spending some quality time with their family.

This summer, we "adopted" our own route, which we run M-F every week. We are looking to recruit an additional 10-12 families to join the 20 or so of us that are currently servicing this route. You can work the route as frequently or as infrequently as you would like, but we are asking for a commitment of at least once per month.

Meals will be picked up at 10:45 am at Dublin Community church in downtown Dublin.  Our route takes a little over an hour to complete. We will have an informational meeting and training session on Thursday, October 11 at 10:00 am (immediately following Mass) in Hendricks Hall. Please contact Nancy Davis at 336-337-4421 to RSVP, or with any other questions you might have.
