The O'Reilly Minute

Dear Parents,

October is dedicated to the Rosary, one of the most well-known Catholic devotions. As a school community, we will gather on October 22nd at 2:00 pm in the gym to pray the Rosary. Please feel free to join us if your schedule allows.

We are blessed to have so many parents and parishioners attending our school Masses on Thursdays. I’d like to offer a few gentle reminders to help our students learn proper reverence and respect while in God's house:

  • Snacks and beverages should not be given to school-age children when inside the church.
  • Students are being taught to genuflect as a sign of respect for Jesus' presence in the tabernacle. If students are sitting with their family, please help remind them to genuflect when they leave their pew to join their class or return to school.
  • We encourage students to kneel and say a private prayer before leaving the church. Please help model this reverence, and feel free to enjoy visiting with others in the narthex or courtyard after Mass.

This Friday, our Home and School will sponsor the annual Barn Bash! It’s a wonderful family gathering and celebration of fall. Please note that this event is open to St. Brigid families only. To ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, all children must be supervised throughout the event. Additionally, this Friday we will celebrate ADHD Awareness Day with an orange dress-down day. Please see the details below.

As we approach our Fall Harvest parties on October 31st, please keep the costume guidelines in mind (details below). We are also excited to announce our Fall Pep Rally on October 25th at 1:45 pm in the gym, where we will especially honor our 8th graders. You are welcome to join us for this celebration if your schedule permits.

Picture retakes are on November 5. Picture retake order forms are available in the school office. Please contact the school if you need an order form and we will send one home with your child.

Wishing you autumn blessings,

Kathy O'Reilly

Quarters for Carolina

The 8th Grade Faith and Service Committee are asking for students' help!

We would like to start “Quarters for Carolina” in order to help hurricane victims in North Carolina. There will be collection bins outside each grade level’s classrooms. We will collect quarters beginning Thursday, October 17th through Friday, October 25th.

There will also be a station at Barn Bash to donate quarters for the hurricane victims. The station will be located near the snacks. There are still around 600 people missing in North Carolina, with rescue workers working day and night to help victims. Roads have simply disappeared, houses washed away, and people are left with almost nothing. People in North Carolina were never expecting this damage, and they weren’t prepared for the massive flooding and rain that happened. We want to do our part in helping them as much as we can, and we hope that you will join us. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Fall Festival Costume Guidelines

Our room parents are currently working with teachers to plan a Fall Festival party on Thursday, October 31st. Our Annual Fund will support the treats and games for this annual classroom party. As a second opportunity for a fun dress-down day, students are invited to wear costumes on this day if they wish. Alternatively, students may choose a fall color dress-down day or wear sweatshirts or t-shirts representing their favorite athletic team’s colors or logos.

Fall Festival Costume Guidelines:

  • Keep costumes simple, easy to wear all day, and appropriate for the weather.
  • Face masks that cover the entire face or head (e.g., Spiderman, clown, skeleton) are not allowed.
  • Inflatable costumes are not permitted.
  • Limit accessories (such as wings, crowns, wands) that might be difficult to manage at school or easily lost or broken. Violent props such as pistols, knives, or swords are not allowed.
  • Costumes should not include scary or bloody masks/clothes.
  • Costumes should not obstruct the student’s view or ability to work in the classroom.
  • Costumes must not be inappropriately revealing (e.g., shorts, mini skirts, bare midriffs, or low-cut tops).
  • Costumes must not be offensive or make political statements.
  • Please no makeup.

Please check your child’s costume or dress-down day outfit to ensure it follows these guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation!

October is ADHD Awareness Month

October is ADHD awareness month, and is celebrated on the 18th of the month. ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how the brain works. SPiCE has chosen this month to share information and teach us all a little bit about this disorder.

While the full name has some very misleading labels in its title, ADHD is simply a unique and different way that a person's brain works and sees the world. ADHD affects roughly 11.3% of adolescences worldwide, and can be misdiagnosed or late diagnosed without knowledge of the varying presentations.

We celebrate our family, friends, and classmates with ADHD this month, and hope to grow a better understanding of how amazing these deep thinkers are. They were created uniquely, just as God created us all differently. We each serve a purpose, and hope that with the support and love from all those around us we can build a stronger community.

Please take a few minutes to view the slideshow and gain some new knowledge on ADHD. Spark a discussion with your family and friends. Take some time to hear what your child has learned about ADHD and help us grow our community stronger together. Let us plant seeds of Hope as we grow closer together in knowledge and love.

All are welcome to join the next SPICE committee meeting on October 24 at 6 PM in Hendricks Hall.

St. Brigid Student Featured as Nationwide Children's 2024 Marathon Mile Champion This Weekend

Isabella Ward, St. Brigid of Kildare 4th grader, will be one of 24 patients featured as a Marathon Mile Champion at the 2024 Nationwide Children's Marathon in Columbus on October 20.

24 patients treated at Nationwide Children’s Hospital are selected to line each mile of the Nationwide Children's Marathon, share their story and inspire others. Each Marathon Mile Champion picks a theme for their mile and is celebrated for their strength and bravery. There is also one Angel Mile to honor those who are no longer with us and one Encore Mile where we recognize every patient who has lined the course in the past. Together, they represent the more than 1.4 million patient visits to our hospital every year.

However, students will receive help with homework, build study skills and learn to plan and manage their time.

SBAA Winter Sports Registration Deadline Oct 20

**see updates on Cheer information below in red

St Brigid Athletic Association is happy to announce Winter Sports Registration is now open here.

Please note strict deadlines for registration, there will be no extension of registration dates - so please register as soon as possible.

The registration fee for basketball this year includes a $50 refundable volunteer fee. If/once you sign up and volunteer, you will receive the $50 back at the end of the season. There will be sign up genius with ample volunteer opportunities and of course all coaching positions qualify as volunteering. This was necessary as parent volunteering has been an issue in many of our sports. In addition, the winter sports registration has a hard deadline of Oct. 20. Historically we've had over 10% of sign ups after the deadline which makes team formation very difficult.

Volleyball

Over the weekend the 5th Grade Girls Volleyball Team (Team Ken) made it to the final game of the Catholic Youth Organization Reserve Girls Volleyball Red Tournament. The girls played a competitive game at St. Charles Preparatory School with good passing and consistent serving. They also had a couple spikes over the net. The girls finished Runner-Up.

The 8th grade girls varsity volleyball team competed in the end of season tournament this past weekend. They won their first game in straight sets and lost their second game in a tough back-and-forth 3 setter. The girls played so well together and their winning spirit shone through in both games. It was a great season and the girls demonstrated such growth individually and as a team!

Congratulations to our team members who attend St. Brigid school - Maeve Baumgartner, Gia Lombardi, Victoria Nocco, Mel Prevedello, Anabelle Robinson, Mary Schilling and Sarah Ziegler.

Interested in Becoming Catholic? OCIA Sign Up

"Hello! My name is Pamela. I attended the OCIA program at Saint Brigid. Our class was one of the largest and I was honored to be a part of it. I met many wonderful people and learned what it means to be Catholic. It is a way of life, love and charity in the name of Jesus. I've always loved Jesus although I didn't feel like I knew him. I was raised Methodist. I raised three Catholic children and saw their faith. I went through the program with my teenage grandson. My relationship with Jesus is now very personal. I'm thankful I walked into my grandson's room that day and asked him if he still wanted to become Catholic. He said 'yes' and I said 'me too'." — Pamela (OCIA class of 2024)
