The O'Reilly Minute
Dear Parents,

Through the use of SPiCE funds, we were able to purchase a social emotional learning screener. This is an online screening tool that we will be using during the week of September 23rd for students in grades 3-8. Students will be taking a short survey developed by Panorama Education. The survey will focus on the following areas: growth mindset, sense of belonging, teacher-student relationships, school climate, self management, and social awareness. The survey will be repeated again in May.

By focusing on social emotional learning skills, our hope is to help students foster their strengths, further develop positive relationships, understand emotions, and a variety of other things. Based on the results of the survey, we will focus lessons in religion, health, and guidance to address the needs of our students. Small groups and/or individual sessions with the guidance counselor may also be created based on student need. Please read more about the Panorama Screener in the article below.

Next Tuesday, we will be completing our first safety drill of the school year. While we are performing this drill, we will also be testing our emergency notification system to notify all parents of this drill. Keep in mind this is just a TEST.

Be on the lookout for a call and email coming next Tuesday morning between 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. to notify you of the drill and to ensure we have your current contact information. If you do not receive the notifications via phone and email, please contact the school office at (614) 718-5825 or mrs.dorley@stbrigid-school.org. Thank you for your assistance.

Blessings,
Kathy O'Reilly

SPiCE Skillbuilding Scoop Column Coming October 16th
First Topic - Homework
Last spring, SPiCE shared a survey with all school and parish families. Over 100 families completed the survey. Based on the results, families are seeking more information relating to homework, studying, time management, and organization. Once a month, our Academic Support Team will provide a column in the Wolfhound Wednesday with helpful hints and possible resources to utilize at home.
Panorama Education
Panorama has supported more than 5 million students and 7500 schools across the country. Research shows that concentrating on social emotional wellness has led to a 13% gain in academics, improved classroom behavior, and developed stress management strategies (panoramaed.com). Also, ODE (Ohio Department of Education) has recently adopted Social and Emotional Learning Standards.  According to ODE, “ Social-emotional learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.”

To learn more about social emotional learning, you may visit the following websites and/or read the following articles:

If you have any questions about this endeavor, please contact Stacie Williams, Guidance Counselor, at ms.williams@stbrigid-school.org or Jill Carfagna, Assistant Principal, at mrs.carfagna@stbrigid-school.org.

What is the School Annual Fund?
It covers the cost of student "extras" (illustrated below) so that we don't need to run any other fundraisers throughout the year (no cookie, magazine, wrapping paper sales, etc.). You can read more details here.

Ministry Weekend is This Weekend
September 21-22 after all Masses in Hendricks Hall
This year, during Ministry Weekend, we hope that you'll discover a new ministry group, service committee or faith-formation meeting that speaks to your talents and helps draw you and your family closer to our Catholic Faith. We are grateful for your many gifts and would love to help you find a home within our large parish family!

Stop by Hendricks Hall after all five Masses for food, refreshments, and an opportunity to explore all of our parish's 50+ ministries.
Terra Nova Testing Week for Grades 3-8
During the week of October 14th-19th, 2019, 3rd-8th grade children will be taking the Terra Nova test, a standardized test adopted by the Diocese of Columbus. The Diocese mandates testing in grades three through eight. Testing will occur on each day of the week, Monday-Friday.

As in the past, we ask that parents please don’t plan any appointments that week that would cause your child to miss a portion of a test.

We'll be sending out more test preparation details as we get closer.
Kindergarten Parent Social
Kindergarten parents are invited for a social gathering in Hendricks Hall on Thursday, September 19th from 8am-9am. This will be after school drop off and before Mass. Please join us if your schedule allows. The Kindergarten classes will be attending Mass that day.

Hope to see you there!

ATTENTION! Box Tops is Changing This Year!
Exciting news from Box Tops: they are going digital this year! All you need to do is download the app and scan your receipts. No more clipping tags from your boxes of products.

However, we need everyone to download the app and start scanning when you see items in your grocery cart with the new Box Tops label. Help our school raise extra money to go towards added benefits to our students.

There are still the “old” box tops floating around out there so please clip those and send those into the school so we can get that residual money but eventually all you will see in the qualifying products is the new label. Thanks your your continued support of this great program.
Basketball Registration Has Begun!
Registration is open for basketball for grades 4 through 8, boys and girls, and lil hounds basketball for grades 2-3.
BWHS Feeder School Football Night
The Bishop Watterson High School Feeder School Football Night is Friday, September 20.

Correction: Feeder school students in grades 6-8 receive free admission, and all other feeder school students receive reduced admission of $3.
