The O'Reilly Minute

Dear Parents,

We will be holding our first school safety drill of the school year this Friday. The State of Ohio requires three School Safety Drills each year in addition to our traditional fire and tornado drills.  For this drill, our teachers and students will practice evacuation out of the building including a discussion of alternate escape routes.

Students will discuss with their teachers options for relocation.  In case of an unlikely real incident, students are instructed to run so they no longer can see the building, then work their way to Karrer Middle School or Brigid’s Green, if they can do so safely.  Once in a safe location, parents will be contacted.

Several parents have requested some tips to use when talking to their children about school safety drills or violence in general. Below are several links with great suggestions for parents and teachers:

Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers

How to Talk to Your Kids about School Lockdown Drills without Scaring Them

Bruce McKenna has trained our school for many years in preparation for these unlikely events and required drills.  Please feel free to reach out to him as a resource.  He can be reached at [email protected] or 614-718-5825 ext. 276 (Please keep in mind our drills utilize principles of A.L.I.C.E training and not lockdown trainings).

As part of our safety week, we also sent out a test text, email, and phone call earlier this morning to test our FACTS Parent Alert system. This is the system we use for school closings and emergency notifications. If you did not receive either a phone call, text message and/or email this morning, please contact the school office at (614) 718-5825 or [email protected]

September Blessings,

Kathy O’Reilly

P.S. This Friday, September 23rd, students will have a spirit wear dress down day.  Students are encouraged to wear St. Brigid, Watterson or St. Charles colors or spirit wear.  Friday evening will be a big football match between Watterson and St. Charles! See more about the Wolfhound tailgate and how to get tickets in the story below.

Photo Newsletters: Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd Grades

Our final pieces of furniture were installed this week! This year, we got new classroom furniture for all of our 5th - 8th grade classrooms. The new furniture is not only bright and cheery, but allows for flexible movement for small group work, independent work or full class instruction. Designed to be easily moved and reconfiagured, students are able to adapt the space to however they work most comfortably. Some of our stackable chairs even allow for balance and stability movement while sitting so our students can keep their bodies moving while keeping their brains engaged.

The furniture was funded by a grant as well as a generous donation from St. Brigid of Kildare parishioners Mr. and Mrs. Frauenburg.

Care Packages for College Students & Young Adult Children Serving in the Military

Wednesday, October 5, 7:30-8:30 PM in Hendricks Hall

Moms, Dads, and Grandparents! Please join us on Wednesday, October 5 in Hendricks Hall to assemble care packages for your college students and children serving in the military. This fun event is a great way to gather with others from church who have similar age children and encourage your child from a distance.

Our goal is to keep our young adults encouraged in and connected to our faith.

Wear a shirt from your child's school or branch of service and bring some care package goodies to share (see the sign-up link).

St. Brigid will provide a variety of care package box sizes, prayer cards, books/ devotionals, and stationary for adding a note!

Parents will be responsible for mailing their box(es).

To help us prepare, please sign up for one or a combination of items to bring for care package creation. Feel free to bring items not listed here. These are simply suggestions. In addition, please let other "new college parents" know about this event and share the material sign-up link!

There is no limit to how many can participate, but this sign-up will close on Monday, October 3.

Children's Liturgy of the Word

Children's Liturgy of the Word takes place during the 9 am Mass. Children (non-communed children, preschool through grade 2), may join us in the Church basement to hear the Children's Liturgy of the Word from the Children's Lectionary as well as learn about the readings of the day. Children will be dismissed prior to the First Reading and return after the Homily, during the Presentation of the Gifts.

We require two Shepherds and two volunteers to provide this opportunity for our families. The First Shepherd is the leader of the readings and lesson for the day and the Second Shepherd assists the First. Volunteers help the Shepherds with miscellaneous tasks, but do not teach the lessons. All volunteers (Shepherds and general volunteers) are required to be compliant volunteers in accordance of Safe Environment Policies. Those who sign up will have follow-up communications with the Safe Environment Coordinator as well as the Director of Religious Education.

If you have questions regarding this ministry, please contact the Religious Education Office at 614-761-1176.
